Xiaomi has just changed the game. It has done what even Apple failed to. You may know Xiaomi has one of the biggest phone companies in the world. You may know it for its other electronics. But, it has just made a supercar. Yes, that’s right. The biggest attraction at this year’s Mobile World Congress or MWC is not a tech innovation but the Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo concept supercar which looks really cool and straight out of a sci-fi movie.
This makes Xiaomi the first Chinese automaker to participate in the iconic racing game’s concept car program in its 28-year history. Historically, legacy automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ferrari and BMW have been part of this program.

It also shows how serious Xiaomi is about its automobile business after making a serious pivot only a couple of years ago. While this might still be a concept car and is unlikely to be commercially available, it’s a timely reminder of what Xiaomi is capable of pulling off in this space.
Xiaomi has shared limited information about the car as well. From what we know, it sits on company’s 900V Silicon Carbide (SiC) platform and features a radical low-slung design with scissor doors. There is a massive carbon fiber rear wing and center-lock wheels hiding carbon-ceramic brakes.

Apart from this, it throws everything about the traditional cars out of the window. The regular seats are gone. There is a redesigned cockpit with a butterfly-shaped steering wheel, a panoramic display screen and what Xiaomi calls a “cocoon-shaped sofa” for the driver’s seat.
The car is designed to go fast. So there are multiple front air-channel intakes, a shark-fin roofline structure, T-shaped headlights and an exaggerated rear diffuser with extensive ducting.
