Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way governments, businesses and educational institutions operate. They’re driving innovation, improving efficiency and creating new opportunities. Abu Dhabi has recently taken a big step in how its government will function. Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Abu Dhabi to explore ways to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and expand its use across important sectors. According to reports, they signed four agreements with OpenAI to expand the use of advanced AI across sectors, including energy, government services, investment, and education. Here’s everything you know about the deals between the UAE and OpenAI.
The Abu Dhabi Government and OpenAI have launched what they describe as the world’s first AI-native Machine-Readable Government initiative. The project will reportedly convert selected government policies and regulations into formats that AI systems can read and understand, assisting officials with routine regulatory assessments, including applications for permits and certificates.
The first pilot of this initiative is already operational with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, which is led by the Department of Government Enablement. Do note that the officials will retain control over final decisions, while each AI assessment will be linked to the relevant regulation.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), a state-owned integrated national oil and gas company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, has recently signed an agreement with OpenAI and G42 subsidiary Inception42 to bring advanced AI technology into its operations.
With this newly formed partnership, ADNOC becomes the first company in the energy industry to deploy OpenAI’s frontier technology. According to the reports, this agreement will support ADNOC in better decision-making across operational, investment and commercial activities. Not only that, but it also will help improve efficiency and productivity. The technology will run on OpenAI’s GPT models using computing infrastructure located within the UAE.
Mubadala, a government-owned investment fund based in Abu Dhabi, Inception42, the AI division of the UAE-based G42 group, and OpenAI have signed a separate agreement to use advanced AI technology in investment analysis.
The partnership will use AI to identify potential investment opportunities and assess risks. This will help authorities make better-informed decisions and create long-term value through the use of AI.
Inception42 and OpenAI have signed a five-year agreement to increase the use of AI in the UAE’s government, businesses and education sectors. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to provide AI solutions to large organisations, using OpenAI’s technology and Inception42’s AI expertise and consulting services.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Abu Dhabi and the UAE were setting an example for the world in adopting AI across government and businesses. He said OpenAI was proud to support the UAE’s AI goals and shared its commitment to making AI safe, accessible and responsible so that everyone can benefit from the technology.
