Sarvam, India’s homegrown AI startup, has recently signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), which functions under the Ministry of Defence. Under the agreement, the company will develop and deploy AI tools for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force to support operations, training and decision-making. Not only that, but it also includes work on technology that can connect different parts of India’s defence capabilities. Do note that the announcement does not disclose the financial details or the specific projects planned under the deal. Sarvam has signed an MoU with HQ IDS to develop AI applications for the operational, training and decision-support needs of the three services and to provide technical support after deployment. The agreement also covers the joint, tri-service and integrated organisations under HQ IDS.
However, the announcement does not disclose the cost of the partnership or details of individual projects. It does set up an umbrella framework for AI projects across the different branches of the Indian military, with HQ IDS facilitating the engagement.
Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar said working with the three Services on the nation’s defence was an honour and a privilege, adding that the company exists to build AI in India, for India. He also thanked HQ IDS for its trust in the company.

The work will be carried out by Chanakya, Sarvam’s firewalled division focused on national security and defence. It will apply the company’s AI stack, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B.
Sarvam and HQ IDS will also take up projects of critical importance, including an “AI fabric” designed to connect the elements of India’s defence capabilities.
The MoU’s focus areas include decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop. Human oversight will remain in place for operational decisions.
The agreement supports the government’s drive towards Atmanirbharta in defence and the indigenisation of defence equipment and capability. Under this plan, the AI layer will be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure.
