For many years since 2006, users who needed immense power had turned to Apple’s Mac Pro. Then came the Mac Studio which was designed for creative users with some insane power needs. And now, the Mac Studio might be the only pro-level desktop option for Apple fans as the Cupertino-based tech giant has just pulled the plug on the Mac Pro. Read on to know more.

The news was confirmed recently by 9to5 Mac with a report that said that the Mac Pro has been discontinued officially. Apple has removed it from the website and the buy page of the product now takes users back to the website homepage. It is almost as if the product never existed. And the story doesn’t end here. Apple also told 9to5 Mac that there are no plans to ever bring back the Mac Pro again.
The last design overhaul for the Mac Pro came in 209 along with the Pro Display XDR. However, even that was discontinued earlier this month. Nevertheless, this version of the Mac Pro earlier ran on Intel. In June 2023, Apple brought the M2 Ultra chip option. But ever since then, there have been no new updates for the device. And that was probably the hint that we missed.
Remembering the Mac Pro, it has had a rather complicated history. As mentioned already, the product was first introduced 20 years ago, in 2006 for users who needed the absolute best computing power. At the time, it felt like a futuristic product but towards 2013, it became outdated.
In 2017, reports of Apple apologising for the 2013 Mac Pro design had surfaced. Then in 2019, Apple redesigned the Mac Pro yet again and gave it a more traditional workstation look. The new product had PCIe slots and offered better flexibility. However, it also came with a hefty price tag of Rs 4,99,900 for the base model. The higher-end variants were way more than this, with prices touching Rs 50 lakh due to import duties and component costs.
In 2023, the Mac Pro received its final update with Apple adding the M2 Ultra chip. By this time, Mac Studio had already arrived and was quite powerful, more flexible and even more affordable when compared to the Mac Pro. It honestly is no surprise that Apple is choosing to stick with the Mac Studio for now.
