Google has added a highly requested feature for gamers in Android 17 beta: controller remapping. This new option allows users to customise how their game controller works across the entire system. The update was shared by Android Community Engagement Manager Mishaal Rahman, who noted that it comes after repeated feedback from users.

Controller remapping in Android 17 works at the system level. This means once you change your controller settings, those changes apply to all games automatically. You don’t have to set up controls again for each game, which saves time and effort.

The feature supports both wired and Bluetooth controllers. Users can remap face buttons, triggers and even thumbstick clicks. You can also switch directional inputs, such as swapping the D-pad with analog sticks, depending on your preference.

To use this feature, users can go to Settings and find the new Game Controller menu. For wired controllers, head to Settings > System > Game Controller. For Bluetooth controllers, you can access it by going to Settings > Connected Devices, tapping the menu icon next to your controller, and selecting Game Controller settings on the Device details page.

It’s important to note that the controller remapping feature is currently available only in Android 17 Beta (Beta 2 and later). Also, you must have an eligible device enrolled in the Android Beta program to test this feature. Note that, as the feature is still in beta, some small issues may exist.
