Sony has not decided when to launch the PlayStation 6, says CEO

The PlayStation 5 is now almost six years old. And of course, gamers are excited about what’s next for the console. Rumours around the PlayStation 6 have been circulating for months, with several reports pointing towards a possible 2027 launch. But, according to a new report, Sony has once again made it clear that there is no fixed launch date yet. With memory prices and other component costs continuing to create uncertainty, the PS6 could arrive later than initially expected.

Sony CEO talks about PS6 launch

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, said that the company has still not fixed a launch date for its next-generation console. The interview also covered Sony’s wider business.

This is not the first time Totoki has spoken about the PS6. Back in May, he said that Sony had not yet decided when to launch the new console or how much it would cost. At the time, rising RAM prices were already becoming a concern.

And his comments seem to be in sync with the rumours around the PS6. Earlier, reports suggested that Sony could launch the PlayStation 6 in 2027. However, earlier this year, there were rumours that the console could arrive in 2028 or even 2029.

One of the biggest reasons behind the uncertainty is the rising cost of memory and other components. Sony has already said that it cannot simply absorb all increases in component costs. This could make it difficult for the company to maintain the kind of pricing gamers expect from a new PlayStation.

The PS5 launched in November 2020, meaning the console is now approaching the later stages of its lifecycle. Sony also launched the PS5 Pro in 2024, although it never officially arrived in India.

All we know about the PS6

So, what exactly do we know about the PlayStation 6 so far? Not much officially, but leaks and reports have given us some idea of what Sony could be planning.

To start off, price is one of the biggest questions. A previous leak claimed that the console’s bill of materials could be around $1,000. This is not the expected retail price, as the figure only covers the estimated cost of its components. Sony would still have to factor in manufacturing, shipping, marketing and retailer margins. Based on these estimates, the PS6 could reportedly launch at around $1,100 to $1,200, which would make it Sony’s most expensive PlayStation yet.

When it comes to hardware, reports earlier said that Sony could continue its partnership with AMD for the next-generation console. Earlier leaks pointed towards a 10-core AMD Zen 6 CPU paired with RDNA 5 graphics, along with around 30GB of GDDR7 memory. Another leak has claimed that the PS6 could use AMD’s Orion APU with nine or ten CPU cores and 160-bit 32 GT/s GDDR7 memory.

The PS6 could also focus more heavily on AI and cloud gaming. Recent reports said that Sony may use machine learning for upscaling and neural texture compression, which could improve visuals while helping reduce game file sizes. Cloud gaming could also become a bigger part of the PlayStation experience, with the console reportedly getting faster storage and improved backend hardware.

For now, Sony has not confirmed anything about the PS6. So, it is best to take this information with a pinch of salt.
