Original Angry Birds goes free for Apple iOS

The original Angry Birds game is now free for iOS users, compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad.

The game that started it all, the original Angry Birds is now available for free on the Apple iTunes App Store. The iPad HD version of the game was priced at $2.99 and the iPhone/iPod Touch version of the game was priced at $0.99. Users can now download the game for free, without ads.

The original Angry Birds game seems to be a big cash cow for Rovio. During Christmas week in 2012, the game was downloaded 30 million times. The original Angry Birds game has been around since 2009 and never has been available for free for iOS users.

iPhone/iPod Touch users can download the game here and iPad gamers can download the HD version of the game here.

Earlier, the free version of Angry Birds gave players access only to a few levels. To play the rest of the levels, users had to pay for the entire game.

The Angry Birds franchise can be considered as one of the most successful gaming franchises for the mobile platform, and has seen quite a few successful sequels. These include Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio (based on the animated movie, Rio), Angry Birds Space (taking gravity elements in gameplay to a whole new level), Angry Birds Star Wars (giving users access to the Force on their smartphones and tablets), and Angry Birds Bad Piggies.
