In his will, King Viserys I Targaryen declares his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as the heir to the Iron Throne. However, after Viserys’ death, a vicious rivalry ensues concerning which one will rule as the successor. The rivalry is triggered by Princess Rhaenyra’s half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen, who disputes her right to become the monarch.
Consequently, it triggers the start of The Dance of the Dragons. The series captures the numerous ups and downs that take place within the rivalry, especially concerning the political strategies, betrayals, conflicts, and struggles of different noble factions and their supporters.
