Privacy has become one of the biggest priorities for messaging app users today. While end-to-end encryption already helps keep conversations secure, users often look for more control over what appears instantly on screen. WhatsApp now appears to be testing a new feature that could add another layer of privacy to chats. According to a recent report, the platform is working on a ‘spoiler message’ feature that may allow users to send text hidden behind a blurred effect. It can prove to be helpful for the exchange of sensitive information or hiding of data until the recipient wants to disclose it.
According to details shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a feature that can blur selected messages before they are sent. Instead of showing text immediately in the chat window, the message would appear hidden until the recipient taps on it.
The feature is expected to give users more control over visibility. Moreover, this could also be useful when sharing temporary information such as OTPs, phone numbers, surprise details, or messages that users do not want exposed instantly.

The reported process appears simple and works directly inside the message composer. Users may need to type or paste the message into the text field and then select the text using a long press. After selection, options like Translate, Cut, Copy, and Select all appear.
By tapping the three-dot menu, users may reportedly see more formatting options, including Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Monospace, and Spoiler. Selecting the Spoiler option would place the text behind a blurred layer before sending. Once delivered, the receiver would need to tap the hidden text to reveal the content.
The spoiler message feature is not only expected to work in personal chats. It has been suggested that even group chats can aid in achieving this. This would prevent users from sharing their information with everybody else and also save themselves from any kind of spoilers coming up in their group discussion.
According to reports, the feature is still in the testing phase and has not been officially launched. Reports also suggest that WhatsApp might consider adding support for spoilers for media content, including images and videos, in their coming updates. If everything goes well during the testing period, it will be initially available for the beta users.
