Google appears to be working on a new feature for its AI platform, Gemini, that could make it more similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company is reportedly testing a “projects” feature that will likely allow users to organise their AI tasks and work in a more structured way.

The new feature was spotted by Android Authority in version 16.37.46.sa.arm64 of the Google app, where a “Projects” option appeared in Gemini’s mobile interface. While it isn’t available for use yet, the menu entry suggests it will sit just under the “My Stuff” section. Interestingly, users may not be able to create projects directly from the mobile app at first. Instead, creating projects will likely require using Gemini’s web version.

Details about how Gemini’s projects will work are still unknown. In ChatGPT, projects act like smart folders where users can upload and organise documents, notes, and other materials related to a particular task. Each project has its own instructions and context, making it easier to keep work organised and separate from other tasks.

This approach is somewhat similar to Google’s own NotebookLM, which lets users create individual notebooks by uploading and linking relevant sources. However, Gemini’s projects would likely allow users to do all of this within the AI platform itself, rather than in a separate app. This could make it more convenient for people who want to manage multiple AI-related tasks in one place.

The projects feature was first noticed in development more than a month ago, suggesting that Google is actively testing it and may be close to releasing it publicly.
