Apple’s India price hike didn’t just make the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air more expensive, it also changed how we look at these phones. The iPhone 17 now starts at Rs 99,900, while the iPhone Air has jumped to Rs 1,49,900, a full Rs 50,000 gap for the base models. That’s a big gap to make you think about what you’re paying for, rather than picking up based on which one looks nicer. On paper, the iPhone 17 wins in almost every category, whether it is battery life, cameras, charging speed, or even SIM support, while the iPhone Air’s biggest selling point is how thin and light it feels.
So if you’re trying to decide between the two after the price hike, here’s a proper breakdown of what’s actually different and which one makes more sense for your money.
Right after launching the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo, Apple has revised prices across its India lineup. Unlike its usual practice of lowering prices on older models after a new generation launches, Apple has increased them this time. The iPhone 17 (256GB) has gone from Rs 82,900 to Rs 99,900, a Rs 17,000 hike, while the iPhone Air (256GB) has jumped from Rs 1,19,900 to Rs 1,49,900, a steep Rs 30,000 increase. This creates a Rs 50,000 price gap between the two models despite both offering the same 256GB storage.
At the same time, Apple has discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max from its official website, leaving the iPhone 18 Pro as the entry point to its Pro lineup. It starts at Rs 1,64,900 in India, which is Rs 15,000 more than the iPhone Air.
This is where the iPhone Air shines and earns its name. At 5.64mm thick and 165g, it’s the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made, built with a titanium frame and Ceramic Shield on both the front and back. In comparison, the iPhone 17 is 7.95mm thick and weighs 177g, with an aluminum frame and color-infused glass back. The Air also gets a larger 6.5-inch display versus the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch panel. However, both use the same Super Retina XDR OLED with 120Hz ProMotion and Dynamic Island.
If how the phone feels in your hand and pocket matters more than anything else, this is the one category where the iPhone Air is a clear winner.
Here’s where the price gap starts looking harder to justify. The iPhone 17 has a dual 48MP camera system featuring a 48MP main sensor and a 48MP ultrawide sensor. It gives you a 2x optical zoom range and gives you the flexibility to shoot ultrawide shots. The iPhone Air comes with a single 48MP Fusion main camera and no ultrawide sensor at all.
For anyone who actually uses their phone’s camera regularly, especially for group shots or landscapes, the iPhone 17’s second lens is a useful sensor the Air simply doesn’t have.
Both phones are quick and responsive in everyday use, but on paper the iPhone Air has the more powerful chipset, the A19 Pro, compared to the standard A19 chipset in the iPhone 17. In our testing, the Air scored 2,027,514 on AnTuTu and stayed surprisingly close to the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup in day-to-day performance. Its thinner body does limit sustained performance during heavy workloads, but it still held a stable 60FPS in BGMI, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Genshin Impact without noticeable stutters, making the real-world difference much smaller than the specs suggest.
This is a simple win for the iPhone 17, it lasts longer on a single charge. It gives you 30 hours of video playback and 27 hours of streaming, against the iPhone Air’s 27 hours and 22 hours playback. The iPhone Air can close that gap with Apple’s optional MagSafe battery accessory, which is sold separately, that can push it to 40 hours, but that’s an extra purchase most iPhone 17 buyers won’t need.
Charging-wise, the iPhone 17 hits 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, while the iPhone Air needs 20 minutes with a 20W adapter to reach 50 percent.
In India, the iPhone 17 still supports a physical nano-SIM alongside eSIM, so you can run two active SIMs. The iPhone Air is eSIM-only, including India. A trade-off Apple made to fit a bigger battery into that ultra-thin body. If you rely on a physical SIM for work or a local number while travelling, this is worth knowing before you buy.
Amazon has already listed the iPhone Air for around Rs 1 lakh, just Rs 2,000-3,000 above the iPhone 17. At that gap, it doesn’t feel premium anymore. If the slim design is the reason you wanted the iPhone Air, this is probably the best time to buy it.
However, in terms of pure numbers, the iPhone 17 is the easier recommendation. It has a better camera setup, longer battery life, faster charging, and physical SIM support. On the other hand, the iPhone Air is all about its slim and lightweight design. If you want Apple’s thinnest and lightest iPhone ever and don’t mind having just one camera, a smaller battery, and a bit of heating during heavy use, it’s a good choice.
