Festive sales can make a new appliance look much more affordable than it normally does. ACs, refrigerators, washing machines, TVs and air purifiers often come with price cuts, bank offers, exchange bonuses and cashback deals. With so many offers appearing together, it is easy to focus on the discount percentage and overlook the details behind it.
A little checking before and after you place the order can give you a better idea of what you are actually getting. The product’s recent price, exact model, seller, warranty and final payable amount all matter when judging a festive sale deal, while getting early access and checking the package during delivery can help you make the most of the sale and deal with any issues after the purchase. Here are seven things to check before, during and after buying an appliance during the festive sale season.

Amazon Prime and Flipkart Plus/VIP members can get early access to their respective festive sales, often before the sale opens to other shoppers. If you already have one of these memberships, check the sale schedule so you know when the deals go live for you.

Early access can be useful if you already have an appliance shortlisted and want to check its price as soon as the sale starts. However, don’t buy purely because a deal appears early; compare the product’s usual price, offers and final payable amount before placing the order.
A product showing “40% off” can look like an obvious deal, but the percentage does not tell you whether the appliance is cheaper than it was a few weeks ago. The important number is the price at which the same model has actually been selling.
Before buying, look up the product’s recent price history using a price-tracking service. This gives you some context for the current offer. If a washing machine has been available at around ₹30,000 for several weeks and is now listed at ₹29,500 with a large discount against its MRP, the sale may not be as exceptional as the banner suggests.
This is also why comparing the current price with the product’s recent selling price is more useful than simply comparing the percentage discount.
This is particularly easy to miss with televisions and air conditioners, where manufacturers sell several variants within the same series. A TV can have the same screen size and product family name as another model while differing in refresh rate, panel specifications, speakers or connectivity.
The complete model number is what you should compare. Check it against the manufacturer’s website and make sure the specifications on the shopping site belong to the exact variant you intend to buy.
The same applies to refrigerators and washing machines. Capacity, energy rating, motor or compressor type and additional features can vary between models that otherwise look nearly identical in a listing.
You may be shopping on a familiar e-commerce platform, but the product can still be supplied by a third-party seller. Before placing an order for an expensive appliance, check the seller name, ratings and recent customer reviews.
This becomes more relevant when something goes wrong. A damaged television, incorrect refrigerator model or missing accessory can require a replacement or return, and the applicable process depends on the platform and seller’s policies.
It is also worth checking whether the listing clearly mentions the brand’s warranty and installation arrangements. A slightly cheaper listing is not necessarily comparable if the after-sales terms are different.
Warranty claims on appliance listings can be easy to skim past because the number is usually displayed prominently. The actual coverage needs a closer look.
An appliance may have comprehensive warranty for a certain period and separate, longer coverage for a component such as a compressor or motor. Check whether labour is included, what parts are covered and whether there are conditions for making a claim.

Installation can matter too. Some appliances require installation through an authorised service network. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s warranty terms rather than assuming every component is covered for the same duration.
If you already know which appliance you want but do not need it immediately, a price alert can be more useful than constantly checking the product page.
Price-tracking tools can notify you when the product reaches a particular price. This gives you a way to set your own threshold rather than relying on a sale banner or a countdown timer to decide when to buy.
It can be particularly useful for expensive appliances, where even a small change in the selling price can make a meaningful difference to the final cost.
A festive sale can put several numbers next to the same product: the MRP, sale price, bank discount, coupon value, cashback and exchange bonus. Looking at each saving separately can make the deal appear better than it actually is.
Work backwards from the final amount you will pay. If you are exchanging an old appliance, factor in the value being offered for it as well. Then compare that effective price with the same model at other retailers.
This is also where a seemingly smaller discount can sometimes result in a lower final price. The number worth comparing is not the “You save ₹X” figure. It is what leaves your bank account after all applicable offers and adjustments.
For an expensive appliance, what happens at delivery matters almost as much as what happened at checkout. Check the outer packaging for visible damage and, where practical, record the unboxing from the sealed package onwards.
The video can capture the shipping label, packaging, seals and the condition of the appliance when it is first removed from the box. If a TV arrives with a damaged screen or a refrigerator has visible dents, having a record of the package and unboxing can be useful when raising a complaint.
Don’t throw away the packaging immediately either. Some returns or replacement processes may require the original packaging, depending on the product and seller’s policy.
There is nothing wrong with buying an appliance during a festive sale. The discounts and offers can make these periods useful for buyers, particularly when a product is already on your shortlist.
The important part is separating the sale presentation from the actual deal. Check the recent price, verify the exact model, look at the seller and warranty, and calculate the final amount before paying. Once the appliance arrives, document its condition before discarding the packaging. These checks take only a few minutes but give you a much clearer picture of what you are buying.
