Personal tragedy inspired an AI-driven cancer care platform.

Empowers rural patients with affordable expert tumor board access.

Organizes complex medical reports to ease caregiver burdens.

As soon as you hear the word ‘cancer’, you know for a fact that it is something serious. Even with all the access and innovations made to the healthcare space, cancer is still something that the common person fears. Even more than the person suffering from cancer, the carer, often from the family, is often in guilt, thinking what more care he/she could provide to the person in need.

But due to the limited access, there’s not much everyone can really do. But at the India AI Impact Summit, I came across a booth, BigOHealth, tucked away in one corner, trying to solve a big problem. While their booth may not be the biggest or flashiest one present at the venue, their aspirations were something that caught my attention.

When you first meet Gaurav and Shubham, the co-founders of BigOHealth, they do not immediately strike you as traditional healthcare people. In fact, they do not really possess any background in the medical space. They are simply two software engineers who met during their studies. However, the inspiration to build a specialised platform for the consumer came from a serious family emergency.

The story behind BigOHealth

The main reason behind the foundation of BigOHealth is a bit emotional. It all started when Gaurav’s mother was diagnosed with stage four gallbladder carcinoma. Desperate for the best care available, the family had to travel to one of India’s leading medical institutions, a place that Gaurav referred to as the “Mecca of cancer” in India.

Unfortunately, the verdict that the family received was crushing. The doctor told Gaurav that his mother just had three months to live, further advising the family to simply offer her love, care, and family. This was the point where Gaurav realised how quickly a family can be devastated. But rather than giving up, Gaurav sought to do something different.

When they originally went for a surgical option, the doctor told them the cancer had spread too far, and surgery was impossible. Yet, his mother eventually received her surgery at that same hospital and ended up living for 2 more years. The critical error was that they had initially consulted a general surgical oncologist for what was a heavily liver-specific case. He ended up finding a fatal flaw in their initial medical approach, and that’s how BigOHealth was born.

How does BigOHealth work?

Speaking to me at the event, both the founders went deep dive and explained exactly how their tech works and how they’re integrating AI. First of all, they explained how, during those two additional years, the logistical burden of caregiving was immense. Gaurav had to spend countless hours organising medical reports before every single doctor visit.

But with BigOHealth, they’re utilising AI to organise complex medical data and automatically match patients with the correct tumour boards and specialists. The founders say that they are working to lift the immense burden off carers and give patients a fair fighting chance.

Their app is already live and is available on mobile devices for users to use. They offer a free model where a one-page report can be accessed by uploading the correct documents. Furthermore, they also offer paid services, which help the carer go above and beyond, helping them connect with doctors for even more help.
