Apple’s Vision Pro, Samsung’s Android XR, Meta VR Glasses: The battle for the future of XR

Use the Vision Pro for maybe 10 minutes and your neck starts complaining. The Meta’s VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams. Apple’s headset has a weight ranging from 750 to 800 grams. The Samsung Galaxy XR weighs 545 grams. This discrepancy appears like a simple note on the specification sheet. In reality, it constitutes the entire debate. In theory, this is a battle between three headsets. In reality, it is a clash of visions. Three companies have a different idea of how spatial computing works, and it matters.

Apple: everything on your face

Apple’s vision is the most daring and expensive gamble of all. Just put everything into one premium package, cover it with Apple’s own ecosystem and let the price be the velvet rope. The Vision Pro costs starting at $3,499.

But it still beats all others at the crucial points. Critics claim its field of view of 100 degrees, passthrough and integration with Macs as the best on the market. Just consider – there is no other product like that on the market. However, the cost is double: both the price and the discomfort that comes from the weight. Right now, the answer for Apple is to let the consumer tolerate it. The device is too good and too expensive to become a platform.

Samsung and Google: the platform play

The Galaxy XR headset is like the Apple Vision Pro for Android users. At $1,799, half the cost of the Apple model, the headset is accompanied by Google and Gemini applications preloaded into it. Samsung gives its customers a genuine headset experience without the extra cost of Apple.

However, there is more to it than meets the eye. It is not the headset that is sold but rather the Android XR. The company develops the showcase, and Google provides the operating system; other manufacturers are welcome to join later. This is the same scheme Google used in smartphones but this time around strapped to your face.

Meta: games, films and a puck in your pocket

\Meta chose the path that no rival would take. Its VR Glasses retail at $1,299, launch in the spring of 2027, and divide the hardware into two components. The glasses have sensors and micro-OLED displays (about 5K together) housed in a magnesium alloy frame. Compute, power, and memory reside in another component, attached by an optical cable, driven by the Snapdragon Reality Elite from Qualcomm. Right, that is what your pocket needs to lug now. That is the cost of 100 grams.

There is also content, the true strength of Meta. These have been called the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device, which has the VR version of some of Disney+ content. They use the existing Quest libraries, meaning day one does not mean an empty app store. Touch Plus controllers, Quest 3 controllers, and gamepads are supported.

But there is even a social one. As part of its timeline for realistic avatars, Meta has started with the shoulders-up option in the Ray-Ban Display glasses, while its VR Glasses get the full-body treatment. But whether people wish to have their realistic avatar in the virtual room is a different thing.

What Meta is counting on is the fact that people want a personal cinema and games console, not an airborne Mac monitor. This is quite a clear insight into the market.

Less weight and cost always have some price to pay. Its field of vision is 70 degrees horizontally, so you’ll get to see the window to virtual worlds, not a room that you can walk through. Maximum battery life will last only three hours. And there are no controllers in the package. This means that $1,299 is only the minimum price to pay.

Meta has not opened pre-orders, which leaves Apple and Samsung months to respond with price cuts, lighter designs or smarter software. There is no word yet on India pricing or availability for Meta’s glasses either, and import duties will decide who actually competes here. Meta has shown its hand. Apple and Samsung have not shown theirs.
