Trivia

"1. Anurag Kashyap had read the novel in 2006 when it came out and in 2014, was approached by AMC from Scott Free Productions for a series in English. Kashyap declined the offer as he did not want to do "anything based in India, in English".
2. While Anurag Kashyap directed the Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) angle of the story, Vikramaditya Motwane looked upon Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan).
3. The storyline is highly based on real-time events in Mumbai and India between 1980-1993. The character of Gaitonde is loosely based on real-life gangster Arun Gawli, whereas the character of Sulemani Isa is based on Dawood Ibrahim. The Rags to Riches Story of Gaitonde, Fleeing to Dubai and 1993 Bomb Blasts by Isa et all are based on the real characters.
4. First Indian Netflix Original TV Series.
5. Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) saves contact numbers of the persons with some random names based on what they do or what position they are or what sect they belong to. For instance, she had saved the name of the tech guy who was tracking Ganesh Gaitonde's & Dattak Singh's call as "Breaking News", that of Sartaj Singh as "Milkha" and that of her senior or boss as "Boss DK" (a cuss word).
6. Anurag Kashyap said that he shot and treated the series as a film.
7. Sacred Games was shot in different real locations as it was set in a period, which Motwane expressed was a "huge logistical challenge". While parts of the novel were set in 2004, the series was changed to the modern-day.
8. Season one covers the first quarter of the original novel.
9. The titles of all the episodes have their meaning in Hindu Mythology. A parallel is drawn between the theme of an episode and the mythical story related to the title.
10. It is showed that Saif's character Sartaj wanted to become a cricketer. In real life, both his father and grandfather have played and served as a captain in National Indian Cricket Team.
11. It was the seventh collaboration between Anurag Kashyap (Director) & Nawazuddin Siddiqui, after Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev-D, Monsoon Shootout, Raman Raghav, and Mukkabaaz.
12. Both the stories of Ganesh Gaitonde and Sartaj Singh were shot simultaneously by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane respectively.
13. Motwane said that he felt liberated to tell the story without being confined to a three-act structure.
14. Viewers compared Nawazuddin's character Ganesh Gaitonde to his previous character Faizal Khan from "Gangs of Wasseypur" (2012), which was also directed by Anurag Kashyap.
15. Nearly every episode has a direct reference to the Hindu epic Ramayana, either in the form of the popular 1980s comic adaptation (episode one) poster of Hanuman and Rama and Sita (episode 2 and 3) the 1988 tv series Ramayan (episodes 4) performances (episode 6) or in the series dialogue, for example as Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) in episode 7 threatens the Muslim population of Mumbai with the fires of retribution, he refers to Hanuman's revenge at the hands of King Ravana In then Ramayana on the City of Lanka.
16. This is the fourth Indian original content produced by Netflix, following Brahman Naman (2016), Love per Square Foot (2018), and Lust Stories (2018). It is followed by Ghoul (2018), Selection Day (2018), and Soni (2019)
17. Motwane called the exercise of shooting individually an "experiment".
18.The first time Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddique have worked together.
19.First web series of Saif Ali Khan."

Season and Episode Details

Sartaj Singh is a troubled Mumbai Police inspector who seeks validation from a police force he hates for its corruption. He receives a phone call from Ganesh Gaitonde, a notorious crime lord who has been missing for 16 years. He tells Sartaj to save the city in 25 days, beginning a chain of events that burrows deep into India's underworld. On his journey, Sartaj is helped by Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Anjali Mathur; flashbacks detail Gaitonde's origins, and how he became Mumbai's crime lord. The first season follows Sartaj as he tries to uncover clues about Gaitonde's past and learns about a connection between Gaitonde and his father
In season two, Gaitonde's story continues in flashbacks while Sartaj tries to find answers. Sartaj discovers an ashram to which his father once belonged, and learns about their apocalyptic plans to create a new, conflict-free world. Gaitonde's meeting with Khanna Guruji, how he became part of the ashram, and his activities with them are depicted in flashbacks. Also explored is how Gaitonde was deployed in Kenya by Kusum Devi Yadav – a RAW officer who tries to keep Gaitonde's archenemy Suleiman Isa alive so she can capture and kill Shahid Khan, a dangerous extremist who turns out to be Sartaj's cousin and harbors a plan (with the ashram) to wipe out India.
