1. This is legendary Hong Kong film actor Tony Chiu-Wai Leung's first role in an American film and his first English-speaking role, even though he has always spoken it fluently.
2. Simu Liu tweeted in December 2018 about asking Marvel for the role. He later retweeted that original tweet on July 20, 2019, thanking them.
3. Tony Chiu-Wai Leung knew nothing about Mandarin and did not try to research the character. When Marvel Studios contacted him, they gave him full authority to make his history of the character. He did not mind playing a villainous role (not the first time, he played in Lust, Caution, and Confession of Pain (and more) before), but he sought to give the character depth and history: "I tried to explore the reasons that led him to become who he is. He's a man with h history, who craves to be loved. He is a sociopath, narcissus, stand a bigot, but he is also human and has a family."
4. In the late 1980s Stan Lee had considered a film/TV series about Shang-Chi, and had in mind Brandon Lee, son of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee, for the role. Shang-Chi was visually based on Bruce Lee, so Brandon seemed a fitting choice, but the plan fell through.
5. Simu Liu, when cast as Shang-Chi, was knowledgeable in taekwondo, gymnastics, and Wing Chun. For his role as the Master of Kung Fu, Liu trained in tai chi, wushu, Muay Thai, Pencak silat, Krav Maga, jiu-jitsu, boxing, and street fighting.
6. The movie started filming in March 2020 but was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming resumed at the end of July 2020 and ended in October 2020. This production was recognized as the first feature film to reopen Disney operations globally since the Covid19 lockdown. They managed to successfully wrap production in Australia with zero positive cases and zero production standstills.
7. Tony Chiu-Wai Leung trained for the role of the Mandarin, even though Destin Daniel Cretton said he didn't need to do so since much of the action would involve the rings and computer-generated imagery.
8. The filmmakers cite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Tai Chi Master (1993), The Matrix (1999) series, Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" films, and Jackie Chan films as an influence on the martial arts action.
9. One of the fighters in Xialing's club has been enhanced with the extremes treatment from Iron Man 3 (2013).
10. The symbols in the Ten Rings logo are Chinese characters: "hong" (vast), "Xiong" (variously meaning majestic, male, or heroic), Qiang" (strength and power), "we" (variously meaning might or awe), "Quan" (authority and might), "li" (power and strength), "Zhuang" (strong, robust), "we" (greatness), "Jie" (outstanding) and "sheng" (rising).
11. Shang Chi's apartment features a Kung Fu Hustle (2004) (Kung Fu Hustle) film poster. Wah Yuen who plays Master Guang Bo had appeared in that film as the Landlord.
12. This is Simu Liu's first lead role in a film, having previously had supporting roles in his career.
13. Meng'er Zhang met action designer Yung Lee while making the movie. The two started dating and by the time the movie wrapped, they were married. To celebrate, Simu Liu took everyone to Disneyland while Awkwafina took everyone to karaoke.
