Madras Matinee follows an aging science fiction writer (played by Sathyaraj) who is urged by his caretaker to step away from fantasy and write something grounded in reality. Reluctantly, he begins crafting the story of Kannan (played by Kaali Venkat), a humble TukTuk driver and part-time sanitation worker in Chennai.
As the writer dives deeper into Kannan’s world, he discovers the emotional richness and quiet heroism of everyday life. Kannan’s daughter, Deepika (Roshini Haripriyan), is an ambitious IT professional dreaming of moving to the U.S., while his son, Dinesh, is a teenager navigating love, loss, and identity.
The film uses a “story within a story” structure, blending the writer’s commentary with the unfolding drama of Kannan’s life. This meta-narrative approach adds layers of reflection on storytelling, class, and the meaning of ordinary struggles.
