1. In a deviation from Bollywood traditions, the OST has been composed entirely by independent music artists. Early in 2014, Banerjee and his production team set out to find artists whose music would fit into the story of the film. After shortlisting about 200 songs from non-Bollywood artists across the country, the team began whittling the list down to a handful of songs and artists.
2. Aamir Khan was offered the villain's role in the film but declined it to take a role in Dhoom 3 (2013), another Yash Raj Films production.
3. At the 30-minute mark, the as-yet-unnamed Angry Devi (Swastika Mukherjee's character) asks Byomkesh if he has never seen her. Byomkesh is seen walking past an advertisement bearing a likeness of Anguri Devi as part of an advertisement for a "beauty soap" behind a bus around the 14-minute mark, as the opening credits are being shown.
4. Songs used in trailers are, 'Life is a Bitch' in the teaser and 'Chase in Chinatown' in the first trailer. Both feature in the movie's OST.
5. Rani Mukerji was the first choice for the role of Anguri Devi. The actress however balked at the character's risqué scenes and so Swastika Mukherjee (no relation) was cast instead.
6. The movie is based on the stories of the character Byomkesh Bakshi penned by Saradindu Bandopadhyay.
7. Sushant Singh Rajput had to apply oil for his hair for every shot as the film is set in the 1940s. 8. Around the 13-minute mark, the new item in Hindi on the right-hand side of the page of the newspaper shown on the screen talks about a "Katya and" or "incident of murder. The Bengali term "khunkharapi" translates to something similar. Separately, "Bosepukur" is also mentioned. This could be a hat tip to a Feluda story, "Bosepukure Khunkharapi". Felu da is a character created for children by acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker and polymath Satyajit Ray in a series of children's books in the 1970s and 1980s.
8. The film introduces Satyavati around the 37-minute-25-second mark. According to the original stories written by Sharadindu Bandopadhyay, Satyavati would go on to marry Byomkesh.
9. The writer of Byomkesh Bakshi novels was inspired by Sherlock Holmes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Bakshi has a friend like Holmes has Dr. Watson. The style of storytelling also matches.
