The last air purifier I reviewed cost quite a bit less than the Dyson HushJet Purify Compact, but its claimed coverage was almost three times higher. That number stuck with me when I started using the HushJet, because Dyson is asking you to spend more while covering considerably less space.
So I was curious about what the HushJet actually does better. It is a very different-looking purifier, with Dyson putting a lot of attention on its airflow system and keeping the noise down. There is also the usual mix of sensors and filtration that you would expect from a premium Dyson product.
After spending a considerable amount of time with it, I have a better idea of where the HushJet makes sense and where its limited coverage becomes a problem. Here’s what my experience with the Dyson HushJet has been like.
The HushJet is quite different from the Dyson air purifiers we have seen before. There is no familiar loop sitting on top, and the machine doesn’t have the tall tower-like shape that most Dyson purifiers are known for. Instead, there is a star-shaped nozzle on top, which is the main visual highlight of the purifier.
Dyson says the shape is inspired by jet-engine aerodynamics. The idea is to push air through the nozzle at high speed while pulling in surrounding air along with it. This lets Dyson create a strong stream of purified air without needing a much larger outlet. The HushJet is 47cm tall and has a 23cm diameter base, so despite the Compact name, it isn’t exactly a tiny desktop appliance. It has a fairly substantial presence, especially if you put it on a bedside table or desk. I found it more natural to keep it on the floor.
The build quality is what you’d expect from Dyson. Everything feels well put together, and the top nozzle gives the purifier a very distinctive look. Whether you like it will depend on your taste, though. It certainly doesn’t disappear into the background like some of the more conventional cylindrical purifiers.

There are two buttons on either side of the HushJet that make access to the filter fairly straightforward. Pressing them releases the outer body, which can then be lifted to reveal the filter underneath. It makes filter access easier without having to deal with screws or complicated clips, and also keeps the purifier’s compact design fairly clean.
There is a small LCD display on the front, along with three physical buttons. One controls the fan, one handles power and the third cycles through information such as PM2.5, PM10, filter status and Wi-Fi information. That’s pretty much all you get on the machine itself. This is where Dyson’s reliance on the MyDyson app becomes obvious.
Setting up the HushJet with the MyDyson app was surprisingly easy. The purifier appeared in the app as soon as I opened it, so there wasn’t much to do apart from selecting the device and pairing it. Once connected, I found myself using the app more than the controls on the purifier itself.
From the app, you can turn the purifier on or off, change the fan speed, switch to Sleep mode, and set schedules or timers. You can also check the filter life, which is useful for keeping track of when it is time to replace the filter without having to remember it yourself.
The Data and Insights section is where the app gets more useful. It shows indoor and outdoor air quality, including PM2.5 and PM10 readings, with both current and historical data available. The historical graphs use 15-minute average readings, so you can see how the air quality has changed over the day instead of just looking at the current number.
There is also a dedicated How To section covering the different controls, maintenance, and filter replacement. I liked having all of this in one place, particularly for things you may not remember after setting up the purifier.
Voice control is supported as well, with Siri Shortcuts, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. The Siri option was particularly useful for me as an iPhone user, since I could control the purifier without opening the app every time.
One feature I found more interesting was Continuous Monitoring. Once enabled, the HushJet continues monitoring the air quality even when the purifier itself is switched off. That gives you a more complete picture of the room’s air quality over time, rather than limiting the historical data to periods when the purifier was running.
The air inside my home is usually fairly clean, so the HushJet didn’t have to do much heavy lifting during regular use. To properly test how it responds when pollution levels suddenly rise, I had to introduce some pollutants myself. I used deodorant for this, as it gave me a simple way to create a noticeable change in air quality and see how quickly the purifier reacted.
In Auto mode, the HushJet detected the change in air quality in just 3 seconds after I sprayed the deodorant. It then took around 1 minute and 4 seconds for the air-quality level to return from high/severe levels to good. The fan speed also adjusted automatically as the purifier detected the change, so I didn’t have to intervene during the test.
I then repeated the test with the fan running at maximum speed. Detection was even quicker at around 2 seconds, while the air-quality level returned from high/severe to good in approximately 36 seconds. The difference was quite noticeable compared to Auto mode, showing that the higher airflow can clear a sudden spike in pollutants much faster.
For regular use, I would still leave it in Auto mode. It responded quickly enough to a sudden change in air quality and handled the fan-speed adjustment on its own. Maximum fan speed is useful when you want to clear a sudden spike faster, although the airflow becomes more noticeable at this setting.
The MyDyson app also makes it easier to follow what’s happening during a test. Along with the overall air-quality reading, it shows PM2.5 and PM10 levels, and you can look at both indoor and outdoor readings. The historical graphs are useful for seeing how the air quality changes over time, rather than just looking at the number on the display at a particular moment.

There is one thing to keep in mind with the HushJet, though: its claimed coverage is 1,076 sq ft. That makes the placement of the purifier important, particularly if you’re trying to clean a larger open space. For a room within its intended coverage, the quick response and automatic fan adjustment make the HushJet easy to leave running without constantly checking on it.
The HushJet uses a 360-degree electrostatic filter made from synthetic fibres. The fibres are given a static charge, which helps attract and trap fine particles as air passes through the filter. Dyson rates this main filter to maintain its performance for up to five years under its test conditions, which is considerably longer than the yearly replacement cycle seen on many air purifiers.
There is also an activated carbon filter that deals with gases and odours, including cooking smells and pollutants such as NO₂. This one needs to be replaced more frequently. The replacement carbon filter currently costs Rs 6,400, so there is still a recurring cost to keep in mind.
The combination makes the HushJet fairly interesting for long-term use. You have a higher upfront cost, but the main particle filter should not need replacing every year. The carbon filter is where most of the recurring filter expense will come from.
Noise was something I paid attention to while using the HushJet, particularly when working or sleeping. At lower fan speeds, it stays quiet enough that I could leave it running in the background without thinking about it. The airflow is audible, but there isn’t much motor noise.
In Auto mode, the fan usually stays at a lower speed when the air quality is good. If the purifier detects more pollution, it increases the airflow and you can hear the difference. I mostly left it in Auto rather than changing the fan speed manually.
Sleep mode is where the HushJet gets the quietest. Dyson claims 24 dB in this mode, and the display also dims, so it works well when the purifier is kept in the bedroom at night.
At higher fan speeds, the airflow becomes much more noticeable. The maximum noise level is rated at 41 dB, so you will hear it when the purifier is working harder. I didn’t find that particularly bothersome during the day, but I preferred the lower speeds when I wanted a quieter room.
The HushJet sits in a segment where you have several options offering similar room coverage, but the approach to filtration and smart features varies quite a bit. The Blueair 511i Max and Honeywell Air Touch U2 are two relevant alternatives, with both offering similar or slightly different coverage figures.

At Rs 29,900, the HushJet is an expensive air purifier, and its 1,076 sq ft coverage is something you need to consider before buying it. If you have a large living room or want one purifier to cover a big part of your home, there are options that can handle more space for less money.
Where the HushJet won me over was in the day-to-day experience. It is quiet at lower speeds, the app is one of the better ones I’ve used with an air purifier, and I liked being able to check PM2.5 and PM10 readings, set schedules, and keep an eye on air quality even when the purifier was switched off. The five-year-rated electrostatic filter also means the main filter isn’t another yearly expense.
So, I’d recommend the HushJet if you have a reasonably sized room and are willing to pay more for the overall experience. If coverage is your main priority, I’d look elsewhere. At this price, the Dyson name alone isn’t enough; the HushJet works best when its smaller footprint and smart features actually fit how you plan to use it.
