If you’re still using the Google Pixel 6a, it might be time to check your phone’s battery health, especially after reports of the device overheating. Google has confirmed a battery-related issue affecting a portion of Pixel 6a units and is preparing a software fix that could impact your phone’s performance.
The Pixel 6a launched in 2022. Many users have stuck with its promise of software support until July 2027. However, a recent warning from Google is raising concerns about the phone’s safety.
In the last few weeks, there have been at least two reported cases of Pixel 6a units catching fire — one in May and another just last week. Photos shared by users on Reddit and Android Authority show badly melted devices, hinting at serious overheating issues. While rare, such incidents bring back memories of past phone models with similar battery flaws.

In response, Google will roll out a mandatory software update to help reduce the risk. This update will activate new battery management features that slow down charging and reduce battery capacity once the battery has been charged around 400 times.
A Google spokesperson told Android Authority, “A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”
If you use a Pixel 6a, go to Settings > Battery > Battery health to check for any warnings. If your phone shows a battery alert, consider replacing the battery or upgrading your device.
