Microsoft announces Lumia 640, 640XL at MWC 2015

The Lumia 640 and 640XL will add to Microsoft's budget lineup and are both upgradeable to Windows 10.

Microsoft has announced the Lumia 640 and 640XL smartphones at the MWC 2015 trade show in Barcelona. The devices will be available at a price of €139 (approx Rs. 9,200) and €159 (approx. Rs. 11,000) for the Lumia 640 (3G and LTE respectively) and €189 (approx. Rs. 13,000) and €219 (approx. Rs. 15,000) for the Lumia 640 XL (3G and LTE respectively). The devices currently run on Windows Phone 8.1, but will be upgradeable to Windows 10 in future. The company is also throwing in 1TB of OneDrive storage and a year-long subscription to Office 365 with these devices.

On the specifications front, the Lumia 640 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC along with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a 5 inch 720p display. The 640XL on the other hand is a phablet, with a 5.7 inch display and 3000 mAh battery. There is also an 8MP rear and 1MP front camera on the Lumia 640, while the 640XL has a 13MP rear camera.

The Lumia 640 will be available in three different variants, including dual-SIM dual-3G, single-SIM LTE and dual-SIM LTE variants. The 640 XL on the other hand, will have four variants, adding a single-SIM 3G variant into the mix. Microsoft also showcased its Surface Hub and HoloLens devices at the press conference. Launch dates of both these devices should be revealed later on.
