Apple iPhone 18 Pro series: 5 upgrades to expect over iPhone 17 Pro series

Apple usually refreshes its iPhone lineup every year in September. Last year, we saw the arrival of the iPhone 17 lineup, which included a bunch of improvements from its predecessor. While there’s still some time left before we see the eventual release of the iPhone 18 lineup, we do have news about the upgrades that the iPhone 18 Pro series features over the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. From bigger batteries to a smaller dynamic island, there are a bunch of improvements that could be made. Without wasting much time, let’s take a deep dive into it.

Smaller Dynamic Island

First and foremost, the biggest improvement will come in the front of the display, and that too in the form of new display tech. While the display is going to remain very similar to the previous model, the change is going to come with the dynamic island. Leaks suggest this year’s dynamic island will be much smaller in size.

The dynamic island was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro series as a successor to the notch. Ever since the iPhone 14 Pro, not many changes have been made to the dynamic island. But with the iPhone 18 Pro series, leaks suggest that the dynamic island would be almost 35% smaller in comparison, as all the Face ID tech would be moved under the display.

Thicker frame for a bigger battery

Along with the improvements to the display, Apple is also reportedly making the next Pro iPhone thicker in comparison than the predecessor. Most might wonder why, but there’s a very good reason behind it. As per reports, the iPhone 18 Pro is going to feature a bigger battery because of its 8.8mm thick frame. While we don’t yet know the exact battery capacity the phone could have, if leaks turn out to be true, this year’s Pro Max could have the biggest iPhone battery yet.

The most powerful iPhone, yet

Apple makes big jumps in the performance department each year. Last year, with the introduction of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, they introduced the A19 Pro chip, which was very powerful. Heck, their A18 Pro is even powering a full-fledged MacBook now. But if reports are true, then the iPhone 18 Pro series could feature a big leap in performance.

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and the 18 Pro Max will come with the 2nm A20 Pro chip, which is said to feature great improvements in the performance and efficiency department. Along with that, it will come paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage on the top-most variant.

Improved camera system

While the iPhone 18 Pro series is not reported to have the biggest camera update in terms of the hardware this year, as reports suggest it will feature a very similar camera setup to the iPhone 17 Pro series. Though, leaks suggest that the bigger upgrade will come in the form of improved apertures, which are expected to be featured across the entire setup. In simple words, this would mean that the camera would be able to capture even better bokeh.

Unified design language

Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro series, which featured an improved cooling system last year, the iPhone 18 Pro series isn’t going to upgrade any such crazy improvements. Rather than that, reports suggest they would use the same cooling setup, but they would improve the overall design language. As per leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro series would feature a more consistent look between the camera housing and the back glass.
