If you have been waiting for Apple to finally give the MacBook a major makeover, you just might have to wait a little longer. For months now, rumours of a redesigned MacBook with an OLED display, touchscreen support and several other upgrades have been making headlines. Many expected this new MacBook to arrive later this year. However, a new report now says the launch could happen in early 2027 instead. While nothing is official yet, the latest leak gives us a better idea of Apple’s plans. Here’s everything we know so far.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is internally testing its next-generation MacBook on macOS 27.1, which is expected to roll out to users towards the end of October. This has led to the prediction that Apple was originally targeting a late October launch for the new laptop.
However, the report also says that the release window currently stretches from late 2026 to early 2027, meaning there is still a possibility that Apple could push the launch into next year.
One possible reason behind the delay could be the ongoing memory supply crunch. Recent reports have claimed that Apple has been facing memory shortages across several Mac products, including the MacBook Air, Mac mini and Mac Studio. If the company is unable to secure enough components for a large-scale launch, it may choose to postpone the new MacBook rather than release it in limited quantities.
That said, Apple has not confirmed the existence of the MacBook Ultra or announced any launch timeline. Until then, it is best to treat these reports with a pinch of salt.
The redesigned MacBook is expected to introduce several firsts for Apple’s laptop lineup. Rumours suggest it could feature an OLED display, replacing the mini-LED technology currently used on high-end MacBook Pro models. OLED panels generally offer deeper blacks, higher contrast, improved colour accuracy and better power efficiency, which could further improve the already excellent display experience on MacBooks.
The laptop is also rumoured to support touchscreen input, something Apple has resisted for years despite offering touchscreens on iPads. Reports have also hinted at a redesigned chassis and even the possible addition of a Dynamic Island-inspired cutout.
If these rumours turn out to be true, the upcoming MacBook could mark the biggest design refresh for the MacBook Pro in several years. However, Apple is yet to officially reveal any details, so it remains to be seen whether the company sticks to a late 2026 launch or pushes the device into 2027.
