The monsoon season is here. While the rain cools the weather outside, it may also create a few problems for your AC. If you notice water dripping from your indoor AC unit during the rainy season, don’t panic. Water leaking from your AC does not always mean the appliance is damaged. In many cases, a blocked drain pipe or poor maintenance is the reason behind the leak. And the good news is that these problems can be fixed. Keep reading to know the most common reasons behind water leaks in AC during the monsoon and what you can do to stop it.

Why does your AC leak water during the rainy season?

Blocked drain pipe

One of the most common reasons behind water leaks is a clogged drain pipe. Over time, dust, dirt and algae collect inside the pipe. During the rainy season, the high humidity helps algae grow faster. This makes the blockage worse. So, the water collected by the AC cannot flow outside and starts overflowing from the indoor unit.

Drain pipe is not placed properly

Make sure that the outdoor end of the drain pipe is open so that water can flow out easily. If the pipe is placed inside a bucket, the water cannot drain properly. This may force the collected water back into the indoor unit.

Damaged insulation on AC pipes

The copper pipes connected to your AC are covered with insulation to prevent moisture from forming on them. If this insulation is damaged or has worn out, the pipes can collect water droplets because of the humid weather. These droplets may then fall onto your floor or walls.

Dirty air filters

Among the common reasons is also dirty air filters. Air filters filled with dust reduce the performance of the AC. This can cause the cooling coils to become too cold and freeze. Once the ice melts, the extra water may overflow from the drain tray. This can cause the indoor unit to leak.

How to fix a leaking AC

If you notice water dripping from your AC, switch it off immediately to avoid damage. Check the drain pipe for any blockage. Also, make sure the drain pipe is hanging freely outside and is not under water. Remove the air filters, wash them with mild soap and water and let them dry completely before putting them back. If the dripping water does not stop even after trying these steps, it is advised to call an AC technician for a proper inspection.
