Telegram can soon expand beyond being a messaging platform, with the company applying for its own .gram top-level domain. If it gets approved, the platform will soon allow users to create personalised web addresses and interactive websites directly. This comes after Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov announced the application on X, saying that the proposed domain could eventually be made available to the platform’s billion-user base. Users may potentially get second-level domains in formats such as yourname.gram, giving them a personalised web identity connected to Telegram.
The proposed domain may allow users to make and host interactive websites via Telegram using a simple prompt. This will help remove the need to separately purchase hosting, configure a domain or rely on conventional website-building services.
Telegram users may potentially use these websites for personal pages, creator profiles, communities and other interactive experiences. The proposal has also prompted users to speculate about possible domain names, including examples such as pro.gram and dia.gram.
-Durov suggested that the website creation process can be particularly useful for people without technical or web development experience. Instead of manually building a website, the users can potentially describe what they want and have Telegram generate the experience.
The proposed domain is not available for registration yet. Telegram’s application must first be reviewed and approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees the global domain name system.
As a result, there is currently no confirmed launch date for .gram addresses. Telegram has also not disclosed how much registration will cost, who would be eligible to claim a domain or how ownership and management of these addresses would work.
