The RAM crisis due to the rise of AI has hit the consumer market, especially the RAM and SSD market, very badly. With consumers getting hurt the most, it’s becoming hard to find RAM at good prices now. I’m sure you’re already seen it, but DDR4 and DDR5 RAM kits are being sold for almost 3-4x of their original value. Amongst the chaos, a russian modder has reportedly somehow managed to create his own stick of DIY RAM, which is fully functional. Not only that, but in the process, he managed to save a lot of money too. Let’s take a look at how the modder did it, and how much money he ended up saving with this DIY project.

Videocardz reported that a Russian modder, VIK-on, known for doing such DIY projects, recently reached out to them and told them how he scavenged a few SK Hynix-branded 16 GB laptop SO-DIMM sticks to build DIY DDR5 RAM. With the help of these two sticks, he built a 32 GB RAM stick, with XMP support, running at full DDR5 speeds of 6400 MT/s.
He explained that he used the DRAM chips from the laptop DDR5 kit and transferred them over to an aftermarket PCB. Along with that, he also used an aftermarket heatsink for cooling. As for the custom firmware used, he explained that he managed to flash the firmware from an ADATA retail kit. Just as the data was flashed, it allowed the memory to run at 6400 MT/s with XMP support.
As for the cost savings, the modder said that he managed to purchase the 16 GB DDR5 RAM stick from a vendor for close to $100 (roughly Rs 9,018) per stick. After that, the aftermarket RAM PCB and heatsink were purchased very cheaply, at around $5 and $7 (roughly Rs 1,018). The total price for the project shared by the modder comes close to $218 (roughly Rs 19,660), which is much cheaper compared to buying a new stick of RAM these days.
This method does work better compared to the SO-DIMM ram converters, as there is no latency, as opposed to using the adapter. While the modder hasn’t showcased the exact process of building the DIY RAM stick, he has said that he will be making a video dedicated to the entire process on his YouTube channel soon.
