OpenAI is reportedly planning to release an AI-powered web browser soon that could compete directly with Google Chrome. According to Reuters, the browser is expected to launch in the coming weeks and aims to change the way people surf the internet using artificial intelligence.

If successful, the browser could become a serious threat to Google Chrome, which currently dominates the market. Chrome also plays a big role in Google’s advertising business by collecting user data to target ads more effectively.

“OpenAI’s browser is designed to keep some user interactions within a ChatGPT-like native chat interface instead of clicking through to website,” the report states. The browser is part of OpenAI’s larger plan to integrate its services seamlessly into both the personal and professional lives of users.

If just a portion of ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly users switch to OpenAI’s browser, it could seriously affect Google’s core ad business.

Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI became a big name after launching ChatGPT in 2022. Since then, it has faced growing competition from companies like Google and Anthropic. OpenAI has also been looking to expand its services. In May, the company announced the acquisition of io, a startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, aiming to create a family of AI devices that help people use AI to create “all sorts of wonderful things.”
