OpenAI has introduced Astra for Law, a legal-focused version of its GPT-6 Astra model designed to help law firms and legal technology companies with research, drafting and other professional workflows. Astra for Law offers GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated legal search index and instructions tailored to legal analysis and writing. The company says the system can search US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and admin decisions across a database containing more than 230 million URLs, with new sources added daily.
OpenAI tested Astra for Law on 200 legal research questions from Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench. At the highest reasoning setting, the system achieved an overall correctness rate of 54%, compared with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone, according to OpenAI.

The company also said Astra for Law identified 24% more reference cases on case-law questions and retrieved up to 54% more relevant passages from the correct court opinions. Along with finding precedents, Astra for Law is designed to apply legal research to specific client facts, identify weaknesses in arguments and explain areas of uncertainty.
The AI giant is also offering the system via a Trusted Access programme for selected law firms. Eligible firms get controls aimed at protecting confidential client information, including Zero Data Retention on the API, while ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default. OpenAI is also working with Latham & Watkins on information permissions, ethical walls and firm-level oversight.
The company is also working with firms including Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray and Cooley to develop custom legal workflows. It is also launching 26 partner-built plugins connecting ChatGPT with specialist legal tools and services.
Astra for Law is initially available to selected law firms in the US through Trusted Access and Codex, while API availability is planned for a later date. It will appear in the model picker as GPT-6 Astra Law.
