OpenAI introduces GPT 6.1 Terra AI model, says it excels at communication and computer-based tasks

HIGHLIGHTS

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Terra is a "significant step up" from GPT-5.6 Terra.

OpenAI says the new AI model offers a better balance of speed, performance and cost.

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model designed to handle everyday work tasks faster and at a lower cost. The company says the model combines visual understanding, computer use and natural writing to help users complete tasks such as drafting proposals, reading technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos. According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Terra is a “significant step up” from GPT-5.6 Terra, with improvements in accuracy, coding and the ability to work with desktop applications. OpenAI also says the new AI model offers a better balance of speed, performance and cost. Keep reading for the details

OpenAI GPT-6.1 Terra: Key capabilities

One of the main improvements in GPT-6.1 Terra is its ability to understand visual information and perform tasks using computer applications. OpenAI tested the model on professional tasks, including creating 3D models from architectural drawings and reviewing animated films to prepare time-coded reports.

According to the company, GPT-6.1 Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra on the Agents’ Last Exam benchmark at medium reasoning effort. It achieved this with one-third the cost. OpenAI also said the model completed tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

The company has also worked to reduce factual errors. On its internal benchmark, the error rate at low reasoning effort dropped from 53.6 per cent with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7 per cent with GPT-6.1 Terra. At maximum reasoning effort, the error rate fell to 4.3 per cent.

GPT-6.1 Terra also brings improvements in software development. On the Terminal-Bench 4.0 coding benchmark, it solved 50.3 per cent of tasks at maximum reasoning effort, more than double the 21.5 per cent score published for GPT-5.6 Terra.

OpenAI noted that GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain better choices for the most complex coding tasks.

OpenAI GPT-6.1 Terra: Availability

GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can also access the model through the OpenAI API under the name gpt-6.1-terra.

OpenAI has priced the API at $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. The company said standard API pricing is 50 per cent lower than that of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
