OpenAI, along with Anthropic, Block, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Bloomberg and Cloudflare, has launched the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF).

AAIF will operate under the Linux Foundation.

AAIF aims to establish a shared, neutral platform for building agentic systems that benefit developers, enterprises, and the broader open-source community.

OpenAI, along with Anthropic, Block, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Bloomberg and Cloudflare, has launched the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to create open, shared standards for AI agents, so they can work safely and efficiently in the real world.

AI agents are increasingly moving from experimental tools to real-world applications, such as coding assistants, workflow automation, and customer service bots. “Without common conventions and neutral governance, agent development risks diverging into incompatible silos that limit portability, safety, and progress,” OpenAI explains in a blogpost. AAIF aims to prevent this by providing a neutral, collaborative space where developers and companies can build interoperable AI systems.

A key contribution from OpenAI to AAIF is AGENTS.md, a simple, open format that provides AI agents with project-specific instructions and context. Since its release in August 2025, AGENTS.md has been adopted by over 60,000 open-source projects and agent frameworks, including GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Codex and VS Code.

Anthropic and Block are also contributing their own projects: the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and goose, respectively.

AAIF will operate under the Linux Foundation, which has a long history of managing open-source projects like Linux, Kubernetes, and PyTorch. OpenAI explains that the goal of the AAIF is to “establish a shared, neutral platform for building agentic systems that benefit developers, enterprises, and the broader open-source community.”
