Families can manage Aadhaar details for children and elderly members easily from a single device.

Aadhaar has been a part of daily life for millions of Indians since its launch back in 2009. Aadhaar is required everywhere, whether you’re renting a house, opening a bank account, getting a new SIM card, receiving government benefits, or filing taxes. Until now, most people have depended on the physical Aadhaar card to fulfil all these needs. However, this often used to cause problems, as the physical card comes with limitations. For example, the print can fade, the card can be lost, the linked mobile number may change, and sharing full photocopies can also risk personal privacy. The government has now launched a new Aadhaar mobile app on January 28, 2026, to deal with these issues. This new app reduces the need to carry physical documents and makes Aadhaar use easier and safer. Here’s what the new Aadhaar app allows users to do.

Selective sharing of Aadhaar details

The new Aadhaar card allows the users to choose the details they want to show when sharing the Aadhaar card. Using this feature, people could avoid handing in the full photocopies of the Aadhar card and the potential misuse of their personal data as well. It comes in handy in situations like hotel check-ins or SIM card verification where only basic Aadhar card details are required.

Offline identity verification on new Aadhaar app

The new app also eliminates the dependency on the active internet connection, as the Aadhaar verification can be done even without an internet connection. This feature is aimed at making the identity checks smoother, especially at the places where there are weak or no networks. In a real-life scenario it can be a lifesaver for people in remote or low-connectivity areas, emergency responders, and field officials who need instant identity verification.

Mobile number update using face authentication

Updating the mobile number linked to Aadhaar has often been a challenge for users, especially because of the long queues. However, the new app allows the users to update their mobile number using OTP and face authentication. UIDAI has also stated that this can be done from anywhere and at any time. This feature removes the need to visit service centres and makes Aadhaar updates much easier.

One-tap biometrics lock for better security on new Aadhaar app

Security is a major focus of the new Aadhaar app, as the app now lets the users lock or unlock their biometric details with a single tap. This gives people more control over when and how their biometrics are used. Furthermore, it also adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorised use of Aadhaar information.

Manage family profiles on a single device

Along with the other things, the new Aadhaar app also lets the users manage multiple Aadhaar profiles on one device. This comes in handy for the families who are managing documents for children or elderly members. Instead of handling multiple cards or papers, all Aadhaar details can be accessed in one place through the app.
