The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched three homegrown AI models under the IndiaAI Mission. The models, EKA-1, Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B, have been developed by Soket Labs and ZenteiQ AiTech Innovations. The launch took place at an event in New Delhi. The models aim to strengthen India’s AI capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technology. They are designed for different needs, from language processing and reasoning to secure AI assistants that can work without an internet connection. Keep reading for all the details you need to know.

EKA-1, Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B AI models

EKA-1 by Soket Labs: EKA-1 is an open, sparse hybrid language model developed by Soket Labs Technology and Research. It has 26.3 billion parameters and was trained on around 7.5 trillion tokens. The model supports all 22 scheduled Indian languages, along with English. It is designed to handle tasks involving mathematics, coding, reasoning and AI agents. Soket Labs said EKA-1 has been developed with a focus on India’s banking, financial services and cybersecurity sectors.

Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B by ZenteiQ: ZenteiQ AiTech Innovations has developed two open-source AI models, Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B. Both models support English and 10 Indian languages. Unlike AI tools that depend on cloud servers, these models can run locally on devices and work without an active internet connection.

The models are designed to help users search documents, retrieve information and automate tasks. They could be useful in sectors such as defence, government, education and industries where data privacy and security are important.

Why is this launch important?

The launch is part of India’s efforts to develop its own AI technology. The IndiaAI Mission has supported the companies by providing access to subsidised computing infrastructure and funding for research-related expenses.

MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said these models could improve productivity across government, businesses, research and education.

The launch marks another step towards building AI technology in India that meets the country’s language, business and security needs.
