What to expect

Google usually holds the dedicated Android event before IO, allowing the main developer conference to focus more on Gemini AI announcements. This year’s event may provide an early look at Android 17.

According to leaks, developer previews, and beta builds, the next Android version could include improvements to multitasking, upgraded screen recording tools, and interface refinements for large-screen devices.

Google may also reveal new information about Aluminium OS, a rumoured project to combine Android and ChromeOS into a more unified platform experience. Reports about the project have surfaced over the last year, but the company has yet to publicly showcase the software.

Aside from that, updates for Android XR and new Gemini AI integrations are expected. Last year, Google used the Android Show to reveal Material 3 Expressive design changes and AI-powered Android features, and similar announcements are expected this time around.
