India has officially started issuing e-passports, a next-generation upgrade to the traditional passport that promises stronger security, faster verification, and smoother international travel. First introduced as part of a pilot program on April 1, 2024, by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the service is now available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) across the country, with more centres expected to join in the coming months.
The new passport comes with the gold-colored emblem printed just below the passport title on the front cover. This small mark sets it apart from standard passports.
The Indian e-passport integrates both physical and digital security features. Embedded within its front cover is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna, which securely stores personal and biometric data. This includes the holder’s fingerprints, digital photograph, iris scan, and essential details like name, date of birth, and passport number.
The chip is contactless and encrypted, ensuring that sensitive information can be read only by authorised systems. This upgrade not only brings India in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines but also reduces risks of forgery, duplication, or identity theft.
Unlike the Aadhaar-based digital ID system, the e-passport is not a standalone replacement but an enhanced version of the traditional passport, designed to complement existing processes while modernising border security.
