For the first time in the history, Delhi Police will deploy AI powered smart glasses during the Republic Day security arrangements in the national capital. As per the senior officials, the smart glasses come equipped with facial recognition software (FRS) and thermal imaging capabilities, allowing officers to identify suspects in real time without stopping people in crowded areas. The devices, developed by an Indian manufacturer, will be directly linked to police databases containing records of criminals, proclaimed offenders and other suspects.
As per the report, the glasses are said to work in partnership with the phones issued to policemen. When used to scan the person, the system will match the facial data with records stored in the database. A green indicator signals no criminal record, while a red alert flags the individual with a known history in crime. This will help the authority to take immediate action, if needed.

The officials stated that this technology can scan faces within a few seconds and will eliminate the need for physical checks and help in maintaining smooth crowd movement during the Republic Day parade route and surrounding areas. This system is also able to identify individuals even if their appearance has changed over the years just by comparing old photographs with live images.

Apart from facial recognition, the smart glasses also include thermal imaging features that can help detect concealed metal objects or potential weapons. It will act as an additional layer of security, specifically in dense crowds where visual inspection alone may not be effective.
“The glasses are connected to the mobile phones of the officers, and the mobile phones will carry the full database of criminals. If someone appears in a green box, it clearly indicates that the person has no criminal involvement. If the box turns red, it means the person has a criminal record. The officer can quickly verify all details, and if needed, the person will be apprehended immediately,” Additional CP Mahla told PTI.

While officials confirmed that sub-inspectors and other field officers will be using the smart glasses during the celebrations, they did not disclose the number of devices procured or the cost involved, stating only that an adequate quantity has been deployed for the event.
