Adobe Illustrator users can now rotate 2D vectors in 3D space, here is how

HIGHLIGHTS

Adobe Illustrator gets Turntable feature, letting users create multiple angles of a design instantly.

Supports up to 74 editable views, including rotation and tilt, while keeping the original 2D style intact.

Helps designers, animators, and game artists save time by reducing repetitive redraw work.

Adobe has officially launched Turntable in its Adobe Illustrator, making this once experimental feature available for everyday creators. The feature was first announced in October 2024 and promised to revolutionise the way artists approach perspective and variety in vector art. Now that it is officially available, it is safe to say that it does deliver on that promise, allowing users to create different angles of an image in under a second. This is compared to hours of re-creating and re-working an image. With this launch, Adobe is focusing on saving time without sacrificing creative control. This is especially helpful for designers, animators, and game artists who want to make their visions a reality.

The Turntable feature helps the user rotate the flat vector design and view it at different angles without compromising the original style. The system offers up to 74 editable views of the original design. This includes rotating the design completely and even tilting it vertically to get a better sense of depth without compromising the 2D look.

The created angle is still fully editable. This means that users have the ability to fine-tune the details even after creating the views. This is particularly beneficial in situations where there is a need for character turnaround since there is a need for multiple angles. It is also beneficial in creating animations or preparing for production.

Adobe states that feedback from the beta phase was a significant factor in the final product. Animators used Turntable to speed up their workflow for pitching decks. Game designers also used it to create concept art quicker and check ideas from different angles.

The primary advantage is the speed of rotation, and that too without compromising quality. Rather than having to redraw the same design repeatedly, there is more time to think about ideas. This also reduces the amount of work that is repetitive.

With Turntable now part of Illustrator, Adobe is adding a tool that blends automation with creative freedom. It keeps the process simple while opening new possibilities for visual storytelling.

To rotate a 2D vector in 3D, select your object and open the 3D and Materials panel (Window > 3D and Materials). Choose an object type like Plane or Extrude to enable 3D depth, then use the Rotation section at the bottom of the panel. You can either drag the on-canvas widget directly over your shape or adjust the X, Y, and Z sliders to tilt and turn your artwork in any direction.
