Sony PS5 players may lose access to digital only games: What is happening

For the last couple of days, Sony PS5 players have had a unique, and completely unexpected problem looming over their heads. They might lose access to their digital-only games if they don’t login to their PSN accounts for a period of 30 days. What initially began as speculation has now been confirmed as multiple media reports and content creators have pointed out this change. On the other hand, Sony hasn’t yet issued an official statement on the whole scenario. So what exactly is happening and can you lose access to your digital games? Read on.

What is happening with the PS5?

Accessibility-focused account “Does it play?” recently highlighted a new DRM behaviour tied to the PlayStation Network. And several news reports and other content creators have also pointed out this change. As per them, digital games purchased after March 2026 may only work offline for up to 30 days. After that, your console needs to reconnect to the internet to verify the license. If it does not, the game may simply refuse to launch and you might lose access to it.

Content creator Hikikomori Media took this further by testing the behaviour on a PS5. By simulating an offline system and forcing the console to think it had been disconnected for a long time, they found that newer titles stopped working entirely. Interestingly, older purchases made before March 2026 continued to run without any issues. This suggests that the change is not retroactive but applies only to recent purchases.

Adding to the confusion, another creator (MrZackXOfficial), contacted PlayStation support to get clarity. The response, which is now circulating online as a screenshot, says that games purchased after the March 2026 update could indeed be subject to this 30-day online check. While this is not an official public statement from Sony, it does solidify rumours.

The PS5 isn’t the only console going through this. Things are reportedly the same on the PS4 as well, however there is a visible timer showing how long you can stay offline. But, on the PS5, that timer appears to be hidden. This means that users have no clear idea when their access might expire. Social media platforms like Reddit and Discord are now full of discussions, with many fearing this could impact people with unstable internet, those who travel often, or even users in remote areas.

What to do next

Right now, the most important thing is not to jump to conclusions. Sony has not confirmed whether this behaviour is intentional, a backend change, or simply a bug that slipped through. It is best to keep an eye on official updates from PlayStation before assuming the worst.

At the same time, it might be a good idea to log into your PSN account if you have not done so in a while, especially if you rely heavily on digital purchases. Staying connected periodically could help avoid any unexpected lockouts, at least until there is more clarity on how this system actually works.
