Aadhaar Card update for free online: Step-by-step guide to change address, name and more

If you need to update your Aadhaar details but have been delaying it, now is the time to do it, as the free services may end soon. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will be offering free Aadhaar updates until June 14, 2025, only. After that, a nominal fee of Rs 50 will be applied. Users can update their details at the myAadhaar portal from the comfort of their homes. According to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update regulations, 2016, it is mandatory to update your Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) on Aadhaar every 10 years.

Aadhaar update: Details that can be updated online

Users can only update selected demographic details online for free. They can update their name, date of birth (under certain limits), address, gender, and language preferences for free without having to visit the physical centres.

However, biometric details like fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs can only be updated by visiting the Aadhaar update centres. Users can even find their nearest update centres by entering their area PIN code on the UIDAI website.

How to update Aadhaar details?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to update your Aadhaar details online.

1. Visit the official website of UIDAI – https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
2. On the homepage, tap the blue login tab and enter your Aadhaar card number and the captcha to get a one-time password (OTP).
3. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Submit it in the designated box and log in.
4. Check whether your existing address and identity proof have been updated. If they haven’t, click on the “Document Update” option at the top right corner of the page.
5. Next, click on the drop-down menu to select the details you want to update and upload the supporting documents.
6. Now, review and submit your documents. Once done, you will get a Service Request Number (SRN), to track the progress of your request.
