The Lenovo Legion Y520 is the company's mainstream gaming laptop and offers good looks with dependable performance

When we talk about gaming on a laptop, there are plenty of options available in India. However, there are only a few that offer gaming at 1080p. Lenovo, a veteran when it comes to making quality laptops, has introduced a range of gaming laptops aimed at satiating the needs of a gamer. Today, we’ll take a look at the company’s mainstream gaming laptop, the Legion Y520. This new laptop is quite an interesting device as it not only lets you play the latest titles, but also has an amazing appearance. It is not too big or heavy, but still offers dependable performance for gamers. The Legion Y520 is equipped with a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti GPU, along with latest Intel 7th Gen processors. This sub – Rs. 1 lakh laptop packs a serious punch and can handle most gaming titles with ease. Here is a taste of the gaming performance of this laptop.

Battlefield 1: No matter how serious the fire fight gets, the Legion Y520 delivers the goods with smooth, glitch free gaming experience

We start with Battlefield 1, which is one of the most graphically intense games available today. The first thing one would notice is how good the game looks on the 1080p IPS display. The colours looks vibrant and the details look sharp. Going through the first campaign in the game, it is quite evident that the audio output is also quite good, thanks to the amazing shoulder mounted speakers. These speakers are further enhanced with the presence of Dolby software in this laptop, which renders an immersive experience for hardcore gamers. Adding to that are the performance figures, which talk for themselves, as the Y520 offers over 50FPS even at high settings. This is due to the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti GPU that uses the company’s advanced Pascal architecture, which is much better than the older GTX 960m.

The processor also plays an important role here as the Intel Core i7-7700HQ provides faster load times and helps in better sound processing. The game never feels sluggish at any given point and that is partly down to the faster processor. Switching to multiplayer mode, the Gigabit ethernet port comes into play. This offers impressive overall data transfer speeds, which is aided by Lenovo’s Nerve Sense app, which prioritizes the available bandwidth between apps.

Dota 2: Achieve 100 FPS at 1080p on max settings!

Dota is another popular game title that one can spend hours playing. The widely popular game has just gone through some major design overhaul, enhancing the overall look and feel of the game. This was done to bring the graphic quality up to notch, so that people could enjoy it on their newer GPUs and displays. The Legion Y520 doesn't have any trouble running the game with all graphics settings set to the maximum level. The game runs smoothly at over 100FPS without a hitch. The bright colours across the map and different characters look amazing as well. Some of these are due to the powerful inbuilt GPU and hence it’s a delight for an avid gamer to enjoy Dota 2. The 1080p IPS panel has a wide colour gamut offering decent contrast and crisp details. This gives you the edge to click on the right character at the right time in the heat of the battle.

Furthermore, Dota 2 gaming sessions can last really long and the cooling on the Y520 copes with that quite easily. The laptop has dual cooling fans behind the display. These can be controlled via the Lenovo Nerve Sense app and made to run faster, thereby increasing the cooling rate. Another really nice feature is the dedicated screen recording button, that lets you record your gameplay and put it up on Twitch, YouTube or any other social media platforms.

DOOM: Playing this game on Ultra settings at 1080p on a laptop is now a reality!

Doom is another very popular title that looks amazing on this laptop, as it matches with whole red and black theme of this laptop. Enabling DX12 and Vulcan on the machine, lets you get the most out of this game. The Legion Y520, not only gives you a wide audio visual experience, but the frame rate also stays at over 60FPS, that too at Ultra settings. These features ensure a gamer has a satisfactory experience, every time he/she is hooked to gaming on Legion Y520.

Of course, the keyboard also has a pretty important role when playing FPS games. The WASD keys are constantly being pressed in order to move and strafe. To help you with that, the Legion Y520 highlights its WASD keys, making it more distinct than the rest of the red backlit keyboard. The keys themselves offer decent travel and the oversized arrow keys makes it easier to use them if you fancy. You don’t even have to worry about the touchpad as it is disabled as soon as you initialize a game.

Does get warm after extending gaming sessions

Yes, with a Geforce GTX 1050Ti under the hood, the laptop does get a little warm near the numpad. It does not get uncomfortably hot, but does get somewhat warm at around 40-45 degrees at peak performance, when on extended gaming sessions in a non-air conditioned environment. However, it does not affect the gaming performance in terms of frame rate drops, and you can continue to game on it without any issues. Also, the ‘Extreme Cooling’ toggle in Lenovo’s Nerve Sense app does help in lowering the temperature further.

We are sure by now you are convinced that the Legion 520 is not just about power, but also offers a wholesome gaming experience. The laptop combines powerful hardware, with other features like a mesmerizing display and immersive audio to offer a top notch gaming experience.

All this makes the Legion Y520 a highly recommended machine for hardcore laptop gamers who love video games and don’t want to compromise on performance, without burning a comparatively big hole in their wallets.
