AI has been a part of our lives for some time now, and depending on the situation, it can feel like either a blessing or a curse. For me, it has mostly been a blessing. It helps me organise my data, boost productivity, assist in research, and much more. Right now, I am in that classic phase where one hand juggles a notebook while the other manages office emails. I spend my days working hard and my nights studying. Yet exams somehow manage to pop up like uninvited guests. In all this chaos, ChatGPT has slowly become my study partner, note organiser, and daily helper. In this article, I have shared the best ChatGPT tips you must use to level up your AI game.

Tip 1: Choose the right ChatGPT model and feature for the task

Not every task demands the same level of speed, creativity, or reasoning. Selecting an appropriate ChatGPT model for the task at hand is the first step. Each model offers different strengths, so planning which one fits your goal before you start leads to better results and saves time. While ChatGPT automatically chooses the best model for the task you are assigned. I personally like to tell it which AI model to use to ensure better results. Here’s a quick peek at which model is good for what:

i. Fast models:

  • Best for quick answers, brainstorming, summaries, and basic explanations
  • It’s ideal when you want speed over depth.

ii. Advanced reasoning models:

  • Better for studying, writing, problem-solving, coding, and complex thinking
  • Useful when accuracy, logic, and structure matter

iii. Multimodal models:

  • Designed for working with images, PDFs, tables, and mixed content
  • Helpful for analysing notes, screenshots, diagrams, or assignments

iv. Built-in tools:

  • Used for data analysis, document review, file handling, and structured tasks
  • No separate installation needed, as they are integrated into ChatGPT.

After choosing your model of interest, the next process is to go ahead and use the “+” icon located on the chat box to select one of the appropriate features as outlined depending on your intended task:

  • Add photos & files: Best to read, analyse, or summarise PDFs, documents, images, or screenshots.
  • Create image: If you want to generate images using prompts.
  • Deep research: Provides detailed, well-structured research across multiple sources, not quick answers.
  • Shopping research: Assists with comparisons of products, prices, or shopping alternatives.
  • Thinking: Suited for tasks with more sophisticated thinking, step-by-step reasoning, or aid in problem-solving.
  • Study and learn: Helps in explanations, revisions, or learning help tailored for students.
  • Web search: Best to get up-to-date information from the internet.
  • Canvas: Helps to write, edit, or work on a long document in a separate, organised space.
  • Spotify: Best for music, playlists, or podcast recommendations within ChatGPT.
  • Quizzes: Test your knowledge or practise questions on a topic.
  • Explore apps: If you want to discover additional tools and integrations available in ChatGPT.

You may think that you can skip this step and just give a direct prompt, but here’s the catch. While ChatGPT will still complete the task, it will increase the response time as an extra step has been added which includes the AI tool to automatically adjust settings.

Furthermore, as per my experience, pre-selecting the right model or tool not only speeds up ChatGPT responses but also reduces daily usage limits being reached prematurely. Please note that the latter has not been confirmed by the company and is my personal experience.

Tip 2: Use the Personalisation setting

After choosing the right model, the next setting that actually improves your day-to-day experience is personalisation. All you need to do is head to your profile image > choose Personalisation. Now you can choose the style and tone of the ChatGPT responses. Here are the options and what they provide:

  • Default: This voice is the best all-around option if you want a smooth-sounding voice.
  • Professional: Great for work or study activities, emails, or formal writing if one wants less emphasis on style and character.
  • Friendly: It feels like one is speaking with friends instead of asking the machine. Very helpful for daily enquiries.
  • Candid: Inspirational but realistic, as you’ll hear no-nonsense opinions and comments but no sugarcoating.
  • Quirky: Adds personality to responses to make them more fun and creative.
  • Efficient: Meant to deliver a quick reply with immediate conclusions. With no need to elaborate.
  • Nerdy: Perfect if you enjoy learning, exploring concepts, and understanding the ‘why’ behind things.
  • Cynical: Good for someone who would like direct answers instead of an answer that makes them feel good.

Tip 3: Write detailed prompts for ChatGPT

One of the biggest mistakes we usually make while using ChatGPT is assuming that it can read our minds and deliver exactly what we expect. With that assumption, we often write a one-line prompt with little to no explanation and then end up disappointed with the result.

Instead, think of ChatGPT as your intelligent best friend who only does what you clearly ask of them. The better you explain what you want, why you want it, and how you want the output, the better the result will be. Here’s an example of how you should write a ChatGPT prompt:

‘Act as a computer architecture expert. Explain microprocessors from an engineer’s perspective. Cover their internal architecture (ALU, control unit, registers, cache), instruction execution flow, and typical performance considerations. Keep the explanation concise and technically accurate, and avoid beginner-level analogies.’

Here’s why the above-mentioned prompt is considered a good prompt:

  • The prompt clearly defines the role.
  • It clearly describes the task.
  • Have a context
  • Clearly sets the output expectations
  • Lastly, it includes constraints.

From tool to teammate

Just to clarify so that you don’t let your imagination horses run wild. I’m not using ChatGPT to avoid studying. On the contrary, it is a tool that makes learning simpler and more efficient for me. Since exam season is in full swing in India, from school students to college students, I’ve focused on the student perspective within the article. However, these habits work in any scenario. Whether it is work, research, or personal projects, the principles remain the same. Feel free to comment below any other tip you’d like to share that you may use to level up your AI game.
