AirPods Max 2 arrives as a quiet update, focusing on internal upgrades like the H2 chip and smarter features rather than a redesign. We had earlier compared its predecessor with the Sony WH-1000XM6, and now, with the new model here, it is time to revisit that comparison. Apple loyalists may lean towards the AirPods Max 2 by default. But for those who want the better pick regardless of ecosystem, or simply want to understand how the two stack up, the choice is not straightforward. This comparison primarily focuses on raw specs and feature differences. But, based on these differences, we shall also see how each headphone could fit into your daily use.
We understand pricing also plays a key role. So, let’s get that out of the way first. AirPods Max 2 is priced at Rs 67,900, while the Sony WH-1000XM6 is priced at Rs 49,990 and typically available around Rs 39,990 with discounts in India.
So, let’s get into their specs and features differences now:

AirPods Max 2 uses aluminium ear cups and a stainless steel frame. It feels premium and durable, but it weighs around 386g. Sony uses lightweight plastic and metal hinges, keeping the WH-1000XM6 at around 252g.
The Apple model distributes weight well, but that 134g difference may matter to some of you, especially over long listening sessions, during travel, etc.
Because of foldable hinges and a lighter build, the Sony headphones feel easier on the neck. It can also be folded inwards and easily carried around in the magnetic latch case. Sony’s case can be easily opened and closed due to the magnetic system.
Apple’s case is also easy to open and close, but by design, it doesn’t feel built for protection. Placing the AirPods Max 2 in the case, however, is the only way to keep it in an ultra-low power state. There is no power button, still.
For controls, Sony gives a Touch panel on the right earcup, a Power button and a noise/mode button. AirPods Max 2 has a Digital Crown (like Apple Watch) and a noise control button.
Apple hasn’t divulged any differences in the new headphones in terms of drivers or sound signature. We are still expecting a 40mm driver tuned to produce a neutral and well-balanced sound signature. Meanwhile, the Sony WH-1000XM6 has a 30mm driver tuned for slightly bass-forward sound.
Sony allows you to tweak the sound using the built-in equaliser (EQ) in the Sound Connect app, while Apple doesn’t give any such manual options.
AirPods Max 2 supports 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio, but only when connected via USB-C cable. Over Bluetooth, it is limited to AAC, so you do not get true high-resolution wireless audio.
Sony WH-1000XM6 supports LDAC, which allows higher-resolution but still lossy wireless audio over Bluetooth, especially on Android devices. It also includes a standard 3.5mm cable for wired lossy listening and works even when the battery is dead.
Both headphones offer top-tier noise cancellation. While Sony was better than previous-gen AirPods Max in our testing, the Max 2 is said to bring up to 1.5x better ANC thanks to a new algorithm and H2 processing. So, only upon testing can we comment on their real-world ANC difference.
Apple has been great at how natural transparency sounds. It feels almost like you are not wearing headphones. Since Max 2 claims to have improved this, we are excited to experience that.
AirPods Max 2 also adds Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts between noise cancellation and transparency. This feature is similar to Adaptive Sound Control on the Sony headphones. The better one will have to work seamlessly.
Conversation Awareness on AirPods Max 2 lowers volume when you speak, similar to the Speak to Chat feature on Sony WH-1000XM6.
AirPods Max 2 is deeply tied to Apple’s ecosystem. Features like Spatial audio with head tracking, Live Translation, Siri gesture controls, and Seamless device switching only work fully with Apple devices.
Sony takes a platform-neutral approach. Its features work across Android, iOS, and Windows. It also provides a simultaneous multipoint connection with two devices, voice commands directly on the headphones, and extensive app-based controls
Sony WH-1000XM6 claims:
AirPods Max 2 claims:
In daily use, Sony lasts longer and needs fewer charging cycles. Apple requires more frequent charging, especially for heavy users.
Sony WH-1000XM6 focuses on usability. It is lighter, folds easily, convenient to carry around, works across devices and lasts longer. For most users, especially in India, it offers stronger value.
AirPods Max 2 focuses on a refined experience for Apple users. It uses processing to deliver smarter features, better integration, and a more refined sound out of the box.
So, based on on-paper specs and information we have, from a practicality point of view, Sony is the easier recommendation. But if you are fully invested in Apple’s ecosystem and want a more seamless, adaptive experience, AirPods Max 2 still holds a clear appeal despite its higher price. Rest, we can be sure about their real-world differences after testing them side-by-side. So stay tuned for that.
