Buying appliance at discount sale: Check these hidden costs first

HIGHLIGHTS

Installation and accessories can add significantly to an appliance’s sale price.

Check electricity consumption and recurring costs such as filters before buying.

Warranty, delivery and fitment terms can also affect the overall cost.

Festive sales are a good time to buy home appliances, especially when brands and retailers start competing with bank offers, exchange benefits and limited-period discounts. A product that has been sitting on your wishlist for months can suddenly become much more affordable. But before you compare prices and add it to your cart, there are a few costs worth checking.

The price displayed on the product page does not always tell you what you will spend by the time the appliance is installed and running at home. Some expenses appear during installation, while others show up months later.

Here are some of the costs that are easy to miss during a sale.

Installation cost

Not every appliance can simply be unpacked and plugged in. Air conditioners, chimneys, water purifiers and some built-in appliances need professional installation, and the standard installation package may not cover everything required at your home.

For an AC, for example, the basic installation may be included while additional copper piping, drain pipes, an outdoor-unit stand or electrical work are charged separately. Chimneys can have similar requirements if the existing ducting does not match the new product.

Check the installation terms before buying rather than assuming that “free installation” means every installation-related expense is covered.

The accessories you need may not be in the box

Some appliances require additional hardware or accessories depending on how and where they are being installed. A washing machine may need plumbing adjustments, while a chimney may require ducting material. A wall-mounted TV could require a separate mounting bracket if one is not included.

These are not necessarily hidden charges from the manufacturer. They are simply costs that depend on your home setup. Checking the box contents and inst

Look beyond the electricity rating

The purchase price is paid once. Electricity is an ongoing expense. This becomes particularly important with appliances that operate frequently or for long periods, such as air conditioners, refrigerators and air purifiers.

Two models in the same price range can have different energy consumption, and the difference becomes more meaningful when the appliance is used for several years. Therefore, it’s important to look at the actual energy consumption mentioned on the label and consider how frequently you expect to use the appliance. A model with a slightly higher purchase price can make more sense if its running cost is considerably lower.

Filters and other consumables can become recurring expenses

Some appliances have parts that need to be replaced periodically. Air purifiers are an obvious example, with replacement filters forming a regular part of ownership. Water purifiers can also require replacement filters, membranes and other consumables.

The initial price of these products can therefore be misleading if you do not check what maintenance involves. Before buying, find out how much replacement consumables cost and how often they are expected to be changed.

This is especially important if you are comparing two similarly priced models. A cheaper replacement filter or longer replacement interval can make a noticeable difference over the years.

A longer warranty does not always mean better coverage

Extended warranty offers become common during major sales, but the duration alone should not decide whether one is worth buying. Check what the standard warranty covers, which components have separate warranty periods and whether labour charges are included. Some parts may have a longer warranty than the rest of the appliance, while consumables and physical damage may be excluded altogether.

For an expensive appliance, an extended warranty can make sense in some cases. But it is worth reading the terms before paying extra for it rather than treating the additional years of coverage as an automatic benefit.

Delivery can become a problem with large appliances

A refrigerator, washing machine, large TV or other bulky appliance needs more than just a delivery address. It also needs a route into your home.

Measure the main door, staircase or lift and the final installation space before placing the order. A product fitting perfectly into your kitchen or living room does not help if the packed box cannot get through the entrance.

This is also where returns and replacements can become complicated. Checking dimensions in advance is far easier than discovering a fitment problem after delivery.

Calculate the cost after you buy, not just before you buy

The simplest way to judge an appliance deal is to look beyond the promotional price. Check what installation requires, whether accessories are needed, how much the appliance consumes, what its regular maintenance involves and what the warranty actually covers.

You do not need to calculate every possible expense to decide whether a sale is worthwhile. Even a basic check of these costs can prevent an attractive discount from becoming an expensive purchase later. The best sale is ultimately the one where the appliance fits both your home and your budget after you take all of these factors into account.
