Samsung may skip another TriFold or Edge variant to rival Apple, here’s why

HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung may skip the next Edge and TriFold models due to weak sales and high costs.

Company is considering wider single-fold devices instead of complex double-fold designs.

Future Galaxy phones will focus more on practical features, comfort, and value.

Samsung is reportedly reviewing the future of its ultra-thin Edge model and the premium TriFold device. While both the products showed Samsung’s ability to push design limits, the low sales and high costs have raised doubts about the future of the products. Last year’s Galaxy S25 Edge and the new TriFold phone showed that standing out in design does not always translate into strong sales. The S25 Edge, which measured just 5.8 millimetres thick, was thinner than Apple’s iPhone Air, yet it struggled to capture buyers who prioritise battery life and overall performance. Reports suggest that Samsung is now carefully weighing whether it makes sense to continue either line.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Won Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s mobile division, said, ‘People have different tastes and requirements and different criteria in selecting their device. We haven’t made a decision on when to have the next one, but it’s still being considered.” Sales of the S25 Edge were lower than other Galaxy models, while the TriFold, despite initial sell-outs, remains a niche product due to its price, weight, and thickness. Choi added that the company is “considering all different options” for future foldables, including a wider version of the standard Galaxy Z Fold, which could deliver some of the TriFold’s entertainment benefits at a lower price.

The future of Samsung’s TriFold phone is also uncertain as the nearly $3,000 (roughly Rs 2,64,000) device unfolds twice into a tablet-sized screen, but its high price and bulky feel when closed have limited its reach. While early batches sold out online, Samsung sees it more as a special category than a mainstream product. Choi said the company is still thinking about whether a second version makes sense.

Amid the TriFold situation, Choi still said that the company hopes to offer ‘as many options as possible and the best solution possible’ for the consumers who want larger screens for productivity or entertainment without paying much. This statement cements the arrival of another Galaxy Fold. However, it’s expected that the device may only fold once instead of twice.

This careful approach comes as Samsung competes closely with the Apple iPhone Air, which is slightly thinner than Samsung’s Edge model. Yet even Apple’s slim phone has reportedly seen softer demand compared to its higher-end Pro versions. That signals that ultra-thin designs alone may not guarantee strong sales.

For now, Samsung is focusing on features that serve a wider audience. The new Galaxy S26 Ultra was recently introduced with a built-in privacy display that makes it harder for others to view the screen from the side. Furthermore, there have been rummours stating that the company is also developing a more advanced S Pen.

This further cements Samsung’s commitment to focusing on comfort, functionality, and value over extremes of thinness or folding complexity. Consumers can look forward to a transition from bold experimentation to devices that better align with the needs of everyday use with the upcoming launch from Samsung.
