Report: Apple to release iOS 6.1.2 soon to fix passcode vulnerability

HIGHLIGHTS

Apple will be releasing the update to fix a vulnerability created by iOS 6.1 update that allowed a by-pass to the password protection on the device by a series of button combinations.

Apple has promised that there will be a iOS 6.1.2 update soon, and as early as within this week, which will attempt to fix the passcode vulnerability that was created by the iOS 6.1 update that was released recently. German website, iFix claims that the latest update will be available by February 20, and will be available for download over the air.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that a series of button press combinations tends to allow users to bypass the password protection on the iOS devices and allows access to user data, including photographs and contact list. Apple acknowledged the problem immediately.

This vulnerability was created after the 6.1.1 update sent out earlier this month. That update was aimed at fixing network connectivity issues on iPhone 4S devices, after certain mobile operators in Europe, including Vodafone, warned users against updating to iOS 6.1 for the time being.

Incidentally, similar problems had cropped up with one of the updates back in 2010. Incidentally, no word yet on what else this update will attempt to fix. If you remember, the problematic 6.1.1 update was only released to fix the network issue on the iPhone 4S. Unless this update brings in any other updates or fixes, expect this to be limited to the 4S again.
