Nokia fixes its web browser for Symbian^3 (and probably Series 60)

Updated on 29-Oct-2010

The native web browser of Symbian^3, and hence the Nokia N8, did require many performance and interface improvements, and in fact, is the very same browser found on the S60 rel.5 OS. Nokia knows this well enough, and it has been working on a new Nokia web browser for a while now. Looks like Nokia is almost ready to release it, with a video leak of it running on the Nokia N8 revealing much. The video has unfortunately been pulled, but in essence, these changes could be gleaned:

Changes include:

  • New address bar interface (overlay, search, suggestions)
  • Bottom bar replaced
  • First screen now homepage instead of bookmarks
  • Updated multi-touch gestures
  • Reduced homescreen lag for instant update

While no exact date of release has yet been mentioned, Nokia is bound to launch it soon, if only to avoid any further recriminations against the N8 and Symbian^3. Also speculated is the fact that the new Nokia web browser could be given to older versions of Symbian OS as well, including rel.5.
