HIGHLIGHTS

Globally, the smartphone market grew by a mere 0.2%, thanks to saturation in developed markets.

Growth in the smartphone market has been flat, globally, in Q1 2016, said a research by the International Data Corporation (IDC). The research showed a mere 0.2 per cent growth in this quarter, with brands like Xiaomi and Lenovo being displaced from their earlier positions in the market.

According to the IDC, Samsung retained its top position in the market (in terms of market share), while Apple came in at second place with a one percent drop in market share, year-on-year. The two behemoths are followed by Huawei (with 8.2% market share), and Oppo and Vivo. Interestingly, Lenovo and Xiaomi, have both dropped out of the top 5, despite some pretty impressive and successful products over the last year.

The global slowdown in the sale of smartphones has been attributed to a saturation in developed markets, which has been imminent for a while now.
