Emergency SOS via satellite has been a valuable feature on Apple’s iPhone. For quite some time we have been hearing that Google is planning to bring a similar feature for its Pixel handsets. Now, a new report has revealed that the Google Pixel 9 series is expected to come with a new modem to support emergency satellite connectivity.
According to a report by Android Authority, citing a Google insider, the Tensor G4, coming first to the Pixel 9 series, is expected to bring a new modem: the Samsung Modem 5400.

While the exact specs are unknown, the new modem is expected to surpass previous generations in both speed and power efficiency.

The Exynos Modem 5400 will likely support 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) which could help the Pixel 9 series be the first to support Android’s native satellite implementation.
Initially, the feature is expected to be provided by T-Mobile (built in collaboration with SpaceX), with potential inclusion by other providers later on.
The satellite link will likely enable texting but not calling. Moreover, a dedicated “Satellite Gateway” app will likely facilitate seamless communication with emergency services through the “Emergency SOS” feature.
Now, let’s see how this feature is expected to work. Firstly, you’ll likely be asked a few basic questions to pinpoint the situation. You might also have the option to notify your emergency contacts. Then, you could start messaging with emergency services to get the necessary assistance.
Some of the questions you might encounter include: “What happened?”, “[Are you/Are they/Is everyone] breathing?”, “In total, how many people are [missing/trapped]?”, “What best describes your situation?”, “What is on fire?”, and more.
The satellite connectivity feature is also expected to be available on the next-generation Pixel Fold.
