HIGHLIGHTS

CERT-In warns Android users of severe security flaws that could expose bank details, photos and personal data.

Vulnerabilities affect Android 13 to Android 16 and stem from chipset issues across major brands like Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus and Xiaomi.

Users are urged to install security patches immediately and enable strong passwords, 2FA and automatic updates.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning about serious security problems in Android phones. According to reports, the vulnerabilities can grant hackers access to private information on your phone. They might also make your device cease to work properly, which is known as a denial of service attack. Whether users have Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, or any other brand using Google’s Android, they are all at risk. These issues do not pertain to one model or one company, and thus, everybody needs to take action. According to experts, updating your phone with the latest security patches is the best way to stay safe.

Which Android versions are affected?

The security issues pertain to many versions of Android, notably Android 13, Android 14, Android 15, and Android 16. Such weaknesses can be used by hackers to hijack a system, view private information, or force the device to crash. The major issues are with memory errors, leaks of sensitive data, and enabling an attacker to have higher access on the device. The threat is alarming, as it might affect not only smartphones but also tablets, smartwatches, or other devices based on Android.

Why these vulnerabilities exist

These security issues are related to flaws in the Android software and chips provided by phone manufacturers. Affected companies include Qualcomm, MediaTek, NVIDIA, UNISOC, and Broadcom. Each of these companies has their specific technical issues that hackers can take advantage of. Because of this, almost all brands of Android devices pose a risk. Hence, users, not only in India but also globally, should be cautious, as these vulnerabilities may lead to exposure of personal and financial information.

How to protect your Android device

Manufacturers of phones will issue security updates that address these issues. It is absolutely essential that these are installed as soon as they become available. You should also:

  • Use strong and unique passwords for all accounts.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on apps that contain personal or financial information.
  • Enable automatic updates to have your phone install security patches automatically.

These steps can ensure less vulnerability to hackers and lessen the chances of your personal information getting stolen. Always remain vigilant and keep updating your device.
