Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup could be in for its biggest change in years, with a new model expected to include both an OLED display and touchscreen support. According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company’s long-rumoured OLED MacBook Pro is set to enter mass production next year and will use advanced “on-cell touch” technology. Unlike traditional touchscreens that require a separate touch layer, on-cell technology integrates the touch sensors directly into the display.
Kuo believes Apple’s decision comes from years of studying how people use iPads. In some situations, he says, having touch controls can make work faster and enhance the overall experience.
“The more affordable MacBook model powered by an iPhone processor, slated for mass production in 4Q25, will not support a touch panel. Specifications for its second-generation version, anticipated in 2027, remain under discussion and could include touch support,” Kuo further explained in his X post.

Recent reports also point to Samsung as the main supplier of the OLED panels. What’s less clear is which Apple chips will power the first touchscreen MacBooks. Earlier rumours suggested M5-powered MacBook Pros could appear in late 2025, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has since reported that Apple might delay the launch until early 2026.

That timing raises the possibility of two major MacBook Pro updates in the same year. Apple has done this before, like in 2023, when M2 Pro and M2 Max models arrived in January, followed by M3 models in October. Alongside the move to OLED and touch controls, the upcoming MacBook Pros are expected to be thinner and feature a smaller notch.
