US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, citing the country’s continued purchase of Russian oil. With these newly imposed tariffs, which go into effect in 21 days, the existing import duty on Indian goods is effectively doubled to 50%.

According to CNBC, Trump accused India of indirectly supporting Russia’s war effort. “They’re fuelling the war machine,” he said, making it clear that his administration will take action against countries that engage in energy trade with Russia.

The measure is part of a larger tariff hike program aimed at nearly 200 countries. Import duties under the new policy range from 10% to 50%, with even traditionally neutral countries, such as Switzerland, facing significant increases. However, notable exemptions have been made for Apple, whose core product lineup, including iPhones, will be exempt from both the existing and new India-specific tariffs.

According to the report, which cited a White House official, Apple devices are expected to be subject to a separate tariff framework that has yet to be fully disclosed. The decision comes shortly after Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Trump at the White House and announced an additional $100 billion in US manufacturing investments, increasing the company’s previous commitment of $500 billion.

While Apple was able to avoid the immediate impact, Trump hinted that broader tariffs, including a potential 100% duty on imported semiconductors, could disrupt global supply chains. Additional sector-specific tariffs may also affect technology companies, including smartphone manufacturers.

On the other hand, there are widespread rumours that Apple may raise the prices of the upcoming iPhone 17 series. This means that the upcoming iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro Max may be more expensive than the iPhone 16 series launch prices globally, including in India, due to tariffs and other factors.
